Following their time together at Boston University, David Quinn coached Kevin Shattenkirk for 10 games with Lake Erie during the 2010-11 season.

Shattenkirk did not produce a point in those games and was scratched after playing three games.

He sat out a 10/17/10 shootout loss to San Antonio before returning to play against Oklahoma City on 10/19/10.

Quinn said that Shattenkirk, at the time, wasn't doing what was needed or playing at the right pace. He said that he handed Shattenkirk a DVD of the previous game and told him to figure out why he wasn't playing against San Antonio. (NY Post)

Kevin Shattenkirk said that he is "very" excited to play under David Quinn again and said that Quinn "is someone who really fits the bill perfectly for us in what we need to do moving forward."

Shattenkirk said that Quinn had a "huge impact" on his career and helped develop him not just in their three-years together at BU but also at the start of Shattenkirk's pro career in Lake Erie.

He said that Quinn took him as a raw player in college and helped develop him to succeed at the next level. (NYR)

Kevin Shattenkirk met with the media following the David Quinn press conference today and said (SNY):

  • Excited to play for Quinn again, "Very. When you have a coach who you are that comfortable with, it's important as a player and gives you confidence about what you are getting into and know what they expect of you. He is someone, I think I am more excited for our team to be coached by. He is someone who really fits the bill perfectly for us in what we need to do moving forward."
  • What should the team expect from Quinn, "hard work. He is someone who drills the details of the game into you. You work a lot in practice and it's not being out there for two-hours and being run into the ground, but when we go out for 30-40 minutes you go out to work and get better and that is something that we need. We have a lot of youth on our team and they need to be coached and developed and he is someone who takes individual players and coaches them on that level and also take the team and make sure we are structured and it's something that you have to work hard to achieve but winning is something that will result as of our work ethic."

After announcing that he would have surgery, Kevin Shattenkirk said that the season had obviously not gone how he wanted it to and that he wasn't able to bring his best on the ice.

He said, "I wasn't giving the guys on the team the best that I had and that almost makes you feel even worse. You don't want to disappoint a teammate and I think that this is the first step to get back to where I am and have a meaningful impact on this team down the stretch."

Shattenkirk added, "there were moments when I was feeling like I was letting people down, the big free agent signing and you want to perform and win for your team.

Kevin Shattenkirk met with the media during Rangers break up day on Tuesday and said the following (NYR):

  • On the season, "it obviously a year that did not go well for me and then for our team. Just something you didn't envision happening September 15 last year. I'm very determined this summer to go back in amazing shape and be the hockey player that management and the fans expected to see."
  • Did you get to show any of your game, "I think that I had bits and pieces of it but I don't think it was a true representation of the player that I am or player I want to be for this team. I think I hold myself to the highest standard of anyone when critiquing my game and who I am in the locker room and the rest of it. For me this was kind of a year where I didn't fulfill that role in my mind. That will definitely drive me to improve on that next season."

Kevin Shattenkirk met with the media in Florida on Friday and said (NYR):

  • "I feel good. It's come a long way. I feel like I have my stride back, which is good, I kind of have that last little push that I feel like I was lacking before the surgery. It's getting better and better every day and now that I am able to skate with these guys, now you take little steps and try to immerse yourself into practice and situations that you can't really replicate without playing with the team."
  • On just being around the team, "that is a big part of it. It gives you something to keep striving for, to know that you have taken that next step in your recovery and rehab. Now it's starting at the bottom and working my way up with these guys and seeing if I am able to play at that level."

Shattenkirk, according to the NY Post, is expected to travel with the Rangers to Florida but won't play in either of this week's games.

Kevin Shattenkirk revealed recently that he had been playing with a torn meniscus since late September and underwent surgery to repair it.

He said that despite working with the Rangers training staff, he could feel his left leg getting weaker and that was preventing him from playing with the "escapability and explosiveness" he normally has in his game.

Shattenkirk said that he received a cortisone shot before the season but that it started to wear off 8-10 weeks later and that even after an attempt at PRP, the inflammation in his knee was returning.

Rangers defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk will undergo surgery to repair his torn meniscus, an injury that has been nagging him since the fall.

Kevin Shattenkirk met with the media to discuss his knee surgery and said (NYR):

  • "I have a meniscus tear in my left knee. Something that I have had all season and trying to play through and it's come to a point now where looking at all the options, trying to stick it out or make it through the season with the way that it's been going, I think it's the right time to get surgery and handle it and take care of it before it becomes something that we don't want to do down the line that could put me out for a crucial part of the season."
  • On the timetable, "it's kind of indefinite right now, I will go and see the doctors today and talk through the surgery and get a better idea from them. It's definitely not something that will put me out for the remember of the season. That is why we are approaching it now and taking care of it now. Get the surgery on Monday and go from there and try to rehab as soon as possible."
  • Did it hurt your play, "it's been painful and something that I have been able to, with the training staff here, manage the pain and what really has been the x-factor is that it limits me off the ice as far as training and keeping my body in the normal shape that I normally can. I feel that because of it my left leg is getting a lot weaker and not allowing me to play my game and have the escapability and explosiveness in my skating that anyone will tell you is a big part of my game. I feel like recently it's been something that has been glaring. It's the point where we needed to decide whether we were going to do this and it's the right thing to do in the long run."
  • On the emotions of the decision, "it's tough. I think that thinking about this year, you want everything to go perfectly and I think I have been trying to battle through this for a lot of reasons and when it came down to it, today and talking about it, you have to think about yourself and I have been worried about a lot more things, trying not to disappoint a lot of people, me included in that. It's hard to be leaving a team, it's never easy to be sidelined, you are not around the team as much or hang around with the guys or feel that camaraderie. I also feel like what I was putting out on the ice, I wasn't giving the guys on the team the best that I had and that almost makes you feel even worse. You don't want to disappoint a teammate and I think that this is the first step to get back to where I am and have a meaningful impact on this team down the stretch."
  • "It's been going on since around the end of September into early October. We did a cortisone shot before the season which helped and started to wear off right around 8-10 weeks or so. We tried another PRP injection over the bye week and it's just the inflammation and everything started to creep back in. It's been going on all season, something we have been trying to progressively attack and it hasn't responded the way we hoped it would.

Alain Vigneault said right before the Winter Classic that Kevin Shattenkirk's season has been a work in progress and that "there is no doubt" that expectations on both sides are higher than what has been shown.

Vigneault said that Shattenkirk knows the areas where he needs to improve and is accountable regarding his performance

He added, "I think Shatty is probably putting a lot of pressure on himself to do real well in front of new teammates, new environment, friends and family. Sometimes it takes a little bit of time."

12/27/17 | Alain Vigneault spoke about Shattenkirk on Wednesday, saying (NYR):

  • On Shattenkirk, "he moves his feet, moves the puck, makes plays that are not easy plays but you beat the first forechecker and that opens things up, on the breakout, in the neutral zone and it gets us going in the offensive zone. We need to see more of that consistently and I am pretty sure he will be the first one to tell you that he needs to be better and that is what we want."
  • Does his game go with how the PP goes, "I don't think so. PP has always been a big part, when you think about Shattenkirk, you think PP QB but I also believe that you see a lot of great 5 on 5 plays with the puck, defending the right way but especially with the puck and going back for it and his skating ability and puck handling ability being able to beat that forecheck, which permits us to spend less time in your zone defending. Maybe they both rub off on one another but in a lot of games you get 1 or 2 PPs so you need to be able to play 5 on 5 and play well."
  • How different is the team when Shattenkirk is going well, "it's the same, we've got Hank, that everyone knows and then after that we have a whole bunch of pieces, that when they play well and work well together, the sum of those makes it a real good team. If we have one guy on one pair or one line not playing well then it makes it challenging for us and we need the 4 lines and 6 D going."

12/8/17 | Kevin Shattenkirk spoke with the media on Thursday about the comments that Barry Trotz had made earlier in the day and said (NYR):

  • On his usage and the trade to Wash, "it didn't work out, we didn't win but as far as my usage, I don't think I was used that way. We had a pretty good committee back there on D. We had a lot of guys sharing a lot of responsibilities and that was part of the reason why I was brought here to help with the load a little bit. That is my job to prove, that is what I am trying to do now and what I am working toward with New York."
  • On his reaction to the comments from Trotz, "it doesn't sit well with you, it's nothing that you enjoy hearing. There is a lot of people who think that about me and I like to use that in my favor and use that as something to keep me boosted and prove them wrong."
  • On the Rangers, "I love the direction we are heading in. It took a little while to fit into the team and how I can play my game but I feel very comfortable now."
  • On his game, "I think I am working toward that. There is a lot more room for me to grow and I need to handle those top end matchups better and when I get those opportunities I need to make them count. McDonagh is a good example for me to watch and the way that he handles players like Ovechkin, Backstrom and Crosby. I'm not there yet but I think I can get there."

Kevin Shattenkirk spoke on MSG after the Rangers win over Florida and said:

  • On the winner, "first and foremost we did a good job in our zone, we were paitient and waiting for their rush and when you force teams to take a shot that is maybe not a high percentage play, puck possession is key and JT gets a loose puck and makes a great break out pass and when you can have that much time on a 2 on 1 it's nice."
  • On his mindset at the end, "the ice was a little choppy, I just wanted to make sure I got it settled down and got my head up. At that point, I know he is a pretty aggressive goalie so I figured I might have that far side."
  • On the defense scoring, "it's by design, something we are trying to do every night. Tonight we realized early on that it was a tight game and that the defense was going to have to chip in and be the 4th or 5th guy in the attack and make sure we are chipping in as well. We did a really good job at getting more aggressive from the second period on."
  • On the win streak, "we are on our way. We don't want to sit back and think that we are clear here. We need to make sure that we are building, we played some good teams on the road and some great games. We need to keep this effort consistent and we will get a lot of wins."
