The Jets have released RB Khiry Robinson, the team announced Thursday.

Robinson, 27, signed with the Jets last March after missing the end of the 2015 season due to a broken leg.

He reinjured the leg during a preseason game against the Eagles and was waived/injured on Sept. 4. Robinson re-signed with the Jets on Dec. 7 but reinjured the leg against the Patriots in Week 16.

Jets RB Khiry Robinson suffered a broken leg during Saturday's 41-3 loss to the Patriots and has been placed on injured reserve, the team announced Wednesday.

Robinson will be replaced on the roster by RB Brandon Burks, who was signed from the practice squad on Wednesday.

It is the third time the 26-year-old Robinson has broken his leg. He also suffered a broken leg during the Jets' final preseason game this season, and his 2015 season ended after eight games due to a fractured tibia.

The New York Jets released their first unofficial depth chart on Monday night. Among the positional battles, it lists Jordan Jenkins and Lorenzo Mauldin at outside linebacker, Kellen Davis at tight end, Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback and Ben Ijalana at right tackle.

Speaking to the media after Monday's practice, Bowles said it is still early in the preseason to determine who will make the 53-man roster entering the year and who will win some of the positional battles.

"Whether they are battling for starting spots or depth spots," Bowles said, "we have a lot of competition that we didn't have last year, so there are going to be some good football players that won't make this team."

Bowles also said:

  • Wide receiver Eric Decker did not practice due to leg soreness, but he expects Decker to practice on Tuesday.
  • He does not know if RB Khiry Robinson, who was activated off the active/physically-unable-to-play list on Monday, will play on Thursday.
  • He believes QB Geno Smith has made "some strides," but will have an idea on how much progress he has made after Thursday's game.
  • Jalin Marshall will see some reps at punt returner on Thursday. Jeremy Ross opened as the No. 1 punt returner on the unofficial depth chart and Marshall is No. 4 on the list, but both will see time in the preseason.
  • He's liked what he's seen out of RB Bilal Powell. "He looks a lot quicker than he did last year," Bowles said. "He's always smart, he's always talking, he's steady. What you see is what you get all the time from him. ... He does a good job training. He keeps his mouth shut, he's very smart, he's very studious and he's very attentive."

The New York Jets activated running back Khiry Robinson from the active/physically-unable-to-perform list Monday after he sat out the start of training camp while rehabilitating from a broken right leg.

Robinson was limited to position drills, but it marked the first time he was on the field participating in any portion of practice since he was signed by the Jets in March as a free agent. He briefly worked in the rehab area after going through running back drills, then watched the rest of practice from the sideline.

"He was only scheduled to do individuals," coach Todd Bowles said, referring to the trainers' plans.

Over the course of the offseason, I've been looking at some of the veterans on the Jets roster in an effort to investigate their potential contributions for the upcoming season. We close today with our final instalment, which is going to look at the potential contributions from running backs in the passing game.

We'll be taking a look at last year's receiving numbers for Matt Forte and Bilal Powell and how those compare with some of the most productive pass catching backs in the league. Then we'll consider what could happen to those numbers now that both players are on the same team. We'll also consider some alternative options and other factors.

The Jets have placed Muhammad Wilkerson, Devin Smith, Khiry Robinson, James Carpenter, Breno Giacomini, and Kendall James have been placed on the active/physically unable to perform (PUP) list, the team announced.

This usually means that the player is recovering from an injury and not yet ready to practice. However, it can also mean that they failed their conditioning test, in which case it's not uncommon for the player to retake the test the following day and then be removed from the list.

In most cases, this is just a procedural move protecting the team's right to retain them on the PUP list in the event they suffer an injury or setback before they are removed from the list and attend practice.
