I just spoke to a source close to the Magic and Dwight Howard trade situation in regards to any Knicks involvement. The answer was blunt.

"Not at all,"?the source said when I asked if the Knicks were in engaged in ANY sort of dialogue to try and trade Howard to New York. "There is zero dialogue."
While it appears that it's a foregone conclusion Howard is destined to head to Brooklyn, I'm told, the Magic prefer to send Howard to the Western Conference and that stalemate has been going on since before the trade deadline. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out, but this does appear to be Carmelo Anthony part two.

Spoke to two people with knowledge of the situation after my Randy Foye plea post earlier and the feeling was that the Knicks were leaning towards signing Marcus Camby and not Foye, who I'm told is getting interest from the Mavs and the Hawks. And this was before the heat got better by signing Ray Allen. Camby was considering the heat and is also very interested in reuniting in the Big Apple.

Word is the Knicks are bringing Camby in soon for a visit...

One scenario is splitting the $3.09M midlevel between Camby and veteran Spanish League PG Pablo Prigioni, who would take about $800,000 of the pie. Prigioni is 35 years old and one person familiar with the Kicks thinking said, ?Don?t erase him from the list yet.??
Camby, once a Knicks fan favorite, was reportedly banished from the Garden by James Dolan so I guess the owner has that whole water under the bridge thing working. Camby, who just turned 38, had a very productive bench role last year for both the Blazers and Rockets. He'd be a nice addition to the front line.

A move to add ?Superman?? for Chandler and Stoudemire is risky. But standing pat with Lin as the starting point guard is risky, too. Nash would change everything, and the Knicks are trying to add more salary to their sign-and-trade with the Suns to compete with the Raptors? potential bid of more than $10 million per year.

Without Nash, the Knicks look no stronger than a first- or second-round playoff team, not on the same level of the champion Heat. They could become the newest version of the Hawks, with their former coach on the bench.

According to sources, Dolan isn?t ready to name Thomas to a formal Knicks position. The Post reported last summer the Knicks owner still maintains a friendship with Thomas but was disappointed his compadre spoke publicly about wanting Donnie Walsh?s position and believed he was secretly lobbying with select media members.

That?s not Dolan?s style. Dolan?s lieutenants, including Garden head honcho Hank Ratner and Garden president Scott O?Neill, have convinced Dolan hiring Thomas in an official capacity isn?t good business...During the press conference following the acquisition of Carmelo Anthony, Dolan went well out of his way to say Thomas wasn?t involved in trade negotiations. Dolan was irritated Thomas gave an impression he had influence on the deal during a Miami radio interview. Dolan had never been afraid to toot Thomas? horn publicly, so it was clear something was up between them.I don't mind the idea of Isiah as a consultant but there's no way that he can return to the front office. Not with the possibility of a coaching vacancy this off season.

As the NBA trade deadline approaches Thursday, the relationship between Mike D?Antoni and Carmelo Anthony appears to be deteriorating.

There are several indications the alliance is getting worse, not better, and it seems inconceivable both will be back with the Knicks next season. According to a source familiar with the situation, Anthony is disgruntled and he may have given off those signs when he didn?t join the huddle during a third-quarter timeout. (Anthony claimed that occurs often).

A source who has been familiar with the J.R. Smith free agent situation has confirmed a Daily News report that a contract to bring the shooting guard to the Big Apple is "about done."
Smith's agent, Leon Rose, met with Garden Chairman James Dolanfollowing Wednesday's Knicks' win over Sacramento to finalize a contract. It is believed that Smith, who has also attracted the interest of the Clippers, will receive the Knicks' $2.5 million exception. Rose also represents Anthony, who has lobbied the club to add Smith, an explosive scorer who can also be erratic at times. He has averaged 12.5 points per game over seven NBA seasons.
TKB was the first to report the Knicks interest in Smith, but those familiar with the situation told me that the organization become concerned about Smith's sometimes polarizing behavior and its possible impact on the Knicks growing chemistry.

Smith is represented by Carmelo Anthony's agency CAA.

No deal has been finalized but I'm told expect an announcement soon.

Clippers point guard Chris Paul played with Smith for two seasons on the New Orleans Hornets and he's now "taken a lead role in recruiting Smith," the source tells the site. The pair also share an agent, Leon Rose, ESPN points out.

The site notes that the New York Knicks "are the presumed favorite to land Smith because they can offer him both a large role on the team, and their pro-rated $2.5 million mini mid-level exception." If Smith ends up there, he'd be reuniting with Carmelo Anthony, who he played with while they both were employed by the Denver Nuggets.

We've been on this story from jump and a source confirmed with me yesterday that Smith to the Knicks is still indeed "likely" because both sides want each other and understand the benefits of the situation stated above.

Say what you want about Smith and the lower competition in China. He's playing in a Euro-style and getting reps that will remind one of this Knicks system.

You know what we've heard, and what he thinks about Broadway...

Spacing in the Knicks offense is the issue.

Carmelo Anthony has zero trust in his shooters at this stage. You saw it last night at the end of one of the overtimes. Toney Douglas was WIDE open for the win and he didn't get him the ball. Melo was triple teamed and read the blitz late and the ball flipped out of bounds. Thanks for the photo @alanhahn.

Neither do I. Not until I speak to someone who leads me to believe there are any legs to it.

Please follow my friend Dan and get him to 3000 followers. He's one of the best Knicks fans I know...

Rumors have been swirling about interest in injured guard Michael Redd, who you'd have to think is licking his chops to want to get to NY to play in this system, if healthy.

And that's a huge if. Redd has had leg issues over the past two seasons and it's safe to say he's lost a step. To come back and play at this speed in this league at his age is asking a lot. I haven't heard about his health, but if he's not signed yet that is a major red flag.

The same can be said for Troy Murphy, who worked out for the Lakers yesterday.?He's another player who simply hasn't had the reps over the past few seasons and reps are what keep NBA players relevant. I would have thought Murphy would have been a perfect fit for the Celtics last year and he didn't click for whatever reason. That question mark is another red flag for me.

If the Cavaliers amnesty Davis and he clears waivers, the Knicks will pursue him. Even after signing Mike Bibby, New York may add Davis to give them another veteran option at point guard. The 32-year-old is currently sidelined with a herniated disc in his lower back and Cleveland has until Friday to waive him.
Again, we've been hearing Baron Davis' name since the day the Chandler rumors cracked. We can also confirm that the feeling is mutual. The hold up continues to be the Cavs decision to amnesty him.

The Knicks have had dialogue with the reps for Evans since last weekend regarding their $2.5M exception. Evans is a defense-oriented shooting guard/small forward who would deepen the modest Knicks bench.

Evans has not been offered a deal from the Knicks yet as they wait on Crawford or Williams...

Sources said Davis will either be waived via the amnesty clause or waived outright Friday. The latter is better for the Knicks.

?They?re watching and waiting,?? one NBA source said of the Knicks.

Davis arrived to training camp with a back injury and the Cavs physical reportedly showed it could take a few weeks to heal. Davis, who is seeking a second opinion, has told confidants the Knicks are his first choice ? if it is his choice.

The Knicks, if they wait long enough, feel they have a better crack at Barea accepting the $2.5 million offer in this suppressed market created by the new CBA. The Knicks can extend a potential pact by two years, but Barea would be wise to sign a one-year deal, then ink a long-term deal next summer when the Knicks have their full $5 million midlevel exception
I'm shocked the demand for Barea isn't higher. The Knicks may luck into this one. Unless the Wolves get PG happy.

But Hill is about to choose the Knicks, who could be one of the heavies in the Eastern Conference. Hill would be slotted in as the starting shooting guard, supplanting Landry Fields and giving the club more leadership, shooting, defense and the depth that the team lost in the Carmelo Anthony trade.

Hill, 39 and the second-oldest player in the league, averaged 13.2 points per game last season on 48.4 percent shooting in 30 minutes a night. The ankle and foot problems from earlier in his career have not plagued him since coming to the Valley of the Sun. He has missed just three games in three seasons.

If you recall the last time the Knicks recruited Hill, besides taking more years from the Suns and a better chance to win games, really was concerned about moving his children away from their friends. He's a family man.

One source close to the process told ESPN.com that talks with the Warriors are "definitely cooling" because of Golden State's unwillingness to include Curry in the deal.

The Clippers, meanwhile, have been aggressive in their pursuit of Paul, but sources told ESPNLosAngeles.com's Ramona Shelburne that neither Gordon nor restricted free agent centerDeAndre Jordan?have been offered to New Orleans.

Said one source close to the situation of Gordon's inclusion: "That's a deal-breaker (for the Clippers)."

With rumors buzzing that the interest level with Grant Hill, who the Knicks recruited several years ago, is heating up it brings up an interesting question for me.

Word is they plan on using Hill at the 2 and may even start him there, but is the right fit there?

I get the system. It's a stretch system that values perimeter shooting. Hill has raised his 3 point %, but he takes just 1 per game, which leads you to believe that he's not the catch-and-shoot threat the Knicks really need at the two in the Mike D'Antoni system.
