This was a coming out party for Chasson Randle. In Summer League, training camp and his time in the D-League, Randle showed an aptitude for scoring. It's easy to see his explosiveness. On Monday, however, he demonstrated a special ability for controlling the tempo. Randle showed exceptional calmness and maturity when it came to manning the Knicks' offense in the second half. The pressure didn't rattle him. The guard made the right passes and followed up on the defensive glass. In the D-League, young prospects are encouraged to find other ways to contribute besides simply scoring the ball. Such a message clearly resonated wth Randle. He was clutch and made his teammates better. That's the DNA for an NBA player with some staying power. Fans should be excited about him.
With Carmelo Anthony sidelined, the Knicks knew their offense would have to come from different sources. It shouldn't be taken for granted, however, how well this group meshed in their star's absence. Seven players scored in double figures. This type of production is dependent on good chemistry, a willingness to share the ball and a collective physicality that keeps opportunities alive. The Knicks had 26 assists and outrebounded Orlando. They were nearly perfect from the charity stripe. They did all the little things right, and that added up to a big win.
