The Knicks are 0-3 and tied for the worst record in the NBA with the Bulls. Of course, it's only three games into an 82-game season, but as of right now, it's hard to argue that the Knicks are not the worst team in the NBA.
In their three games, they are averaging losses by 15 PPG. The home opener against the Pistons where they only lost by four and scored 107 was a game where they blew a 21-point lead. The other two games they scored 89 and 84 points. In both of those games the Knicks' offense was pitiful and they were sloppy. They had 39 turnovers in those games and are averaging over 16 turnovers a game. It's been an ugly display of basketball.
Looking to the other bad teams, the Bulls have at least scored triple digits in two of the three. In the game they didn't, they held the Spurs to just 87 points.
The Sixers are 1-4, but have been competitive in four out of five of them, and just lost to the Rockets at the buzzer. The Mavericks are at 1-4 and they have struggled, but still have looked better than the Knicks.
Things need to change for the Knicks. Jeff Hornacek has to play Willy Hernangomez more. Frank Ntilikina needs to get healthy and start playing. Tim Hardaway, Jr. has got to become more consistent and not just a three-point shooter. Hornacek needs to just do better at his job.
The offense is lost, they're sloppy, and are relying too heavily on Kristaps Porzingis and Enes Kanter, their only double-digit scorers, to put up all the buckets. There needs to be more distribution, ball movement, and effort. It's alarming some of the quotes players are making that fall directly on Hornacek.
The team isn't hustling or getting back on defense. It's not even November, and it's looking like April watching this team play right now. It's frustrating to the fans and it has to be frustrating to Scott Perry and Steve Mills. It's going to come to a point that the Knicks have to make a trade and fire Hornacek.
While they don't want to trade Ntilikina and Hernangomez for Suns PG Eric Bledsoe, they are going to have to reconsider soon. If the Suns' asking price goes down a bit and they only have to give up one of the two along with maybe Courtney Lee and Kyle O'Quinn, the Knicks need to pull the trigger. This can not turn into a 15-20 win season of unwatchable, meaningless basketball.
As of right now, the Knicks do look like the worst team in the NBA. Unless those things are fixed, it could stay that way, which would mean Hornacek will be out of a job. While Friday against the Nets looks like a chance to start fixing things, the Nets are coming off a win over the Cavaliers, and have looked very solid. They are playing team basketball and keeping the ball moving, which should have the Knicks taking notes. Ntilikina will return Friday, so let's see how Hornacek manages the rotation and see if the rookie point guard can shoot some life into this so far lifeless team.
