Knicks head coach Derek Fisher told free agent Carmelo Anthony that the Knicks will be a "better basketball team" than they were last season in order to lure him back to New York (ESPN, July 8).

Anthony has said one of his main goals is to join a team in position to compete for an NBA championship. Anthony met with Fisher, team president Phil Jackson and general manager Steve Mills last Thursday in LA to talk with the free agent.

"He wants to win, wants to be successful," Fisher said. "The time I had the visit with him I just shared with him we'll be a better basketball team because we'll play the game a better way, play as a team, play with a system and format to allow the game to be easier for him for him and his teammates.

Though the Knicks remain confident in their chances of resigning Anthony, Fisher is unsure about how the meeting went. Anthony has yet to make any decisions about his next step as he's met with the Bulls, Lakers, Rockets, and Mavericks.

"I'm not sure if it hit home,'' Fisher said of Thursday's meeting. "I guess we'll find out. Hopefully we'll find out soon."
