The Knicks begin their three game western road trip this afternoon, looking to be a Grinch for the purple and gold L.A. fans, as they take on the Los Angeles Lakers. This is the second and final time the Knicks will play the Lakers this season. The Knicks defeated the Lakers 116-107 on December 13th at Madison Square Garden.

Rasheed Wallace is still out with what is now being called a stress reaction in his foot, missing his 5th consecutive game. Amar'e Stoudemire is not expected to play on this trip but did travel with the team.

Five Questions About Tonight's Game

  1. Will Carmelo torch the Lakers, like he did in the last matchup?
  2. How different will the Lakers look with Steve Nash and Pau Gasol in the lineup this time?
  3. Will the Knicks be able to shake out of their shooting slump from behind the three point line?
  4. What kind of performance can Marcus Camby give in his first game back from a foot injury?
  5. Which bench provides their team with more energy and scoring?

Courtney Lee is just hoping to help the Knicks in any way he can.

The veteran guard, who was finally able to practice at full speed Sunday, knows that missing the entire preseason with a strained neck doesn't help his chances of playing in Wednesday's opener against the Hawks. Though, coach David Fizdale called the 33-year-old's practice "very encouraging."

"I mean I missed the whole preseason, so it wouldn't be one of those things that if I didn't play I'd be bitter about it," Lee reportedly said after practice. "It's just being smart and cautious of the injury that I did have. If he does throw me out there I'll be ready."

Coach Fiz takes on New York! 00:00:59

Joakim Noah is no longer a New York Knick.

The team announced on Saturday that they are outright waiving the 33-year-old center, who had two years remaining on his deal.

Because Noah would not agree to a buyout, the Knicks still owe him the remaining $37.8 million but can spread the money out into smaller cap hits over the next three years.

The Knicks wrapped up their preseason schedule on Friday night, but their remains some mystery and intrigue heading into the regular season.

Who will be the starting point guard?

Head coach David Fizdale said following Friday's 113-107 loss to the Nets that he is still unsure who will be given that role for the start of the regular season against the Hawks on Wednesday. Fizdale, in his first season as Knicks coach, had four different starters in five games at point guard, which consisted of Ron Baker, Frank Ntilikina, Trey Burke and Emmanual Mudiay.

Knicks rookie Kevin Knox struggled down the stretch in his first NBA preseason, but coach David Fizdale believes the best way for the 19-year-old to grow and improve is to remain in the starting lineup.

"He's what we want to put in that spot and just let him go through the hell of it," he said after Friday night's game, per Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic.

Knox scored just three points and missed five of his six shots in the team's preseason finale on Friday night. He shot 2-for-9 on Monday but made all four of his free thows and grabbed five rebounds.

The Nets turned in a well-rounded effort, as Joe Harris and Spencer Dinwiddie each chipped in 16 points while Caris LeVert scored 12 points on four three-pointers.

The Knicks fell behind by 14 points at the end of the half, but fought back in the second half as they outscored the Nets in the fourth quarter by seven points. Tim Hardaway Jr. was leading his team in minutes and points when he left the game with a sprained wrist. Knicks SG Tim Hardaway Jr. said he will be ready to play in the team's season opener on Wednesday after spraining his wrist in Friday night's final preseason bout against the Nets, per Ian Begley of ESPN.

Hardaway underwent an MRI, and Begley said it came back negative. He played 26 minutes, totaling 18 points and one rebound.

The 26-year-old guard is expected to be one of the veteran leaders of this young Knicks squad this season, which means missing him in the season opener against the Hawks on Wednesday wouldn't be the ideal situation for New York. Hopefully rest over the weekend will allow him time to heal and get back on the court.

Though Knicks head coach David Fizdale said Lance Thomas will be New York's starting power forward, he suggested second-year point guard Frank Ntilikina could also spend some time at the 3 or 4.

"You see Frank out there because he can guard 3s and 4s," Fizdale said, according to Newsday's Barbara Baker. "But most of the 4s now, how teams are playing, they're playing perimeter guys at that spot. Frank gives me so many options for having a ballhandler that can do multiple things and guard multiple people."

It's not just the fact the Knicks have so much depth at point guard with Emmanuel Mudiay, Trey Burke and Ron Baker (Fizdale said Baker will start Friday's preseason finale against the Brooklyn Nets), but how Ntilikina sizes up against other forwards.

Tim Hardaway Jr. used to be the only Knick that grew up with a professional athlete as a father. Until Kevin Knox joined the team.

Knox' father, Kevin Knox Sr., was drafted by the Bills in the sixth round back in 1994 after four seasons as a wide receiver at Florida State. Despite only playing two games with the Cardinals over his NFL career, Knox Sr. totaled 1,431 yards on 102 receptions with 11 touchdowns over his FSU career that saw a national championship game in 1993.

The Knicks will waive Joakim Noah before the roster needs to be set on Oct. 15 if they are unable to trade him, reports Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News

Before training camp, it was reported that the team was likely to cut ties with Noah, who has not reported for any team activities.

Noah, who has two years remaining on his four-year, $72.6 million contract, could be waived through the stretch provision, but how much money the Knicks would save will depend on the terms of a potential buyout.

After listing the Knicks, Clippers, and Nets as his three preferred landing spots, Butler had reportedly made the Heat his top trade destination.

When it comes to Knicks rookies, Kevin Knox and Mitchell Robinson -- their 2018 draft picks -- get the most attention. But that definitely changed in Wednesday night's win over the Nets as an undrafted rookie stole the show.

Showcasing his natural ability to score anywhere on the floor, Trier is making a strong case for new head coach David Fizdale to keep him on the roster for the regular season.

Knicks rookie Mitchell Robinson continues to get praise from teammates, the latest coming from Enes Kanter.

Kanter spoke highly of the 20-year-old Robinson, who was a double-double machine during the Summer League, throwing down vicious dunks as he and fellow rookie Kevin Knox stole the show.

"He's a very talented guy," Kanter said, via ESPN. "He's hungry. He's very hungry to learn. He's willing to learn. That's the most important thing."

Knicks' 2018 first-rounder F Kevin Knox is all about winning, and he has made that known before stepping foot on the Madison Square Garden court. He has already said the playoffs isn't out of reach this season despite what some might say, and when asked about his personal goals, he reverts back to wins.

He took it up a notch in a wide-ranging interview with Complex by giving a time stamp for when he believe the Larry O'Brien Trophy -- or the NBA Finals title -- will be back in New York again.

"I feel like that's something we can definitely do in the next five years," he said.

Timberwolves G Jimmy Butler reportedly has a new top trade destination in the Miami Heat, according to the New York Times' Marc Stein.

Of the many teams that have reached out to Minnesota on the All-Star, Stein says the Heat have been the most aggressive. But they don't seem to know what exactly the T-Wolves want to do still.

Butler, who listed the Knicks as a potential trade destination originally, is a $18.6 million cap hit to whatever team he lands on if he is traded. For the Heat, that would be a problem given their status as the team with the highest payroll for the 2018-19 season at $158,327,046. They would have to trade some of their top contracts in order to get Butler on the team.

"So he's basically telling us you've got to compete and you've got to fight for your job. It's a good message for us. Now we have to come out, we gotta fight every day in practice."

He is rumored to be the Knicks' top target in free agency next offseason, but PG Kyrie Irving seems to be loyal to the Celtics for now.

After Timberwolves G Jimmy Butler requested a trade, it was expected Irving's future in Boston was to be questioned, especially given rumors that he and Butler want to play together. New York was a preferred destination for Butler, and before getting traded to the Celtics, Irving had the Knicks on his list as well.

Being one of the best point guards in the NBA, Irving understands why these questions are coming up now with his option to test free agency after this season.

Knicks rookie Mitchell Robinson thinks 29 teams slept on him in the Draft, and he now has one of his teammates comparing him to an all-time great.

"I got a chance to play with him in open gym, and I was shocked a little bit," Trey Burke said Monday at Knicks Media Day. "His ability to just get a rebound off of the rim, just go right back up and just dunk it, it reminded me of like a young -- and this is high praise -- it reminded me of like a young Shaquille O'Neal, just skinnier."

The 20-year-old Robinson was a double-double machine during the Summer League, throwing down vicious dunks as he and fellow rookie Kevin Knox stole the show.

With training camps underway across the NBA, ESPN released their latest power rankings. And the Knicks are at the bottom of the heap.

The group of more than 40 reporters, insiders and editors positioned the Knicks at No. 26 heading into the new season.

It has been the stigma surrounding the Knicks this offseason, that their current rebuild state and absence of Kristaps Porzingis won't make them a competitor this season. However, the addition of rookie F Kevin Knox will be intriguing to watch from the get-go as he will get the chance to make an immediate impact on the floor.

Knicks talk bright future 00:02:19
During New York Knicks Media Day, Kristaps Porzingis, Kevin Knox, and Enes Kanter talked about rebuilding and a new future for the Knicks

GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- The last NBA Rookie of the Year out of Kentucky was New Jersey native Karl-Anthony Towns in 2016. Now, Knicks rookie Kevin Knox is aiming to be the latest Kentucky product to win the award.

"Yeah, I think it's definitely something that I have the chance to get," the 6-foot-9 Tampa native said Monday at Knicks' Media Day. "But winning is No. 1 on my mind right now. I don't really care about anything else right now, just trying help my teammates win, try to help myself get better and just get better throughout the year."

After averaging 15.6 points and 5.4 rebounds last season under John Calipari, Knox excelled in the NBA Summer League with the Knicks. He was named to the All-NBA Summer League First Team after averaging 21.3 points. In fact, Knox remains in touch with Towns, the 7-footer with the Minnesota Timberwolves who starred at St. Joe's-Metuchen in Jersey...

While he's started shooting and light running on the court while working his way back from a torn ACL, Kristaps Porzingis said Monday "there's no timetable yet" for his return to the Knicks.

"Whenever I'm ready I'm going to be back," Porzingis said at Knicks Media Day "We've done things differently, we've been reall conservative. And at the same time, I've been killing myself working," he added, noting that there's no protocol for recovery for a player of his size.

"I want to be back on the court as soon as possible," Porzingis noted. "But it won't happen until I'm 110 percent and medically cleared."

Knicks rookie Kevin Knox knows what he wants.

The former Kentucky star is intent on bringing a winning tradition to the Knicks, a foreign climate to the team over the last two decades.

"I just want to win. I feel like that's something, in New York, they haven't seen in a while," Knox told ESPN. "So that's something that we hopefully can bring back this year, win some games. Get to the playoffs and stuff like that."

Kyrie Irving is "finally getting acclimated in Boston" and hasn't spoken to Jimmy Butler since 2016.

If you're the Knicks' braintrust -- or their fan base -- neither of these is a piece of good news since the franchise is planning on going hard after the New Jersey native during free agency next summer.

"I've been away from Cleveland officially for a year now, and I'm finally getting acclimated in Boston," Irving told ESPN.com.

Knicks F Kristaps Porzingis may be the face of the franchise, but he won't be getting paid like one anytime soon.

During a press conference on Thursday, Knicks president Steve Mills and GM Scott Perry made it known that Porzingis won't be given the max $158 million extension he can be awarded.

They say Porzingis is on board with this mindset, as the Knicks want to make a run at prized free-agent options next offseason, and this extension would take up cap room.
