Dennis Smith Jr. will miss Monday's game against the Chicago Bulls due to the death of a family member over the weekend, according to an SNY source.
The death occurred Saturday after the Knicks' 118-95 loss to the Boston Celtics.
Smith Jr. was incredibly close with the family member, who had helped raise him from a young age, per a source. It's unclear when the guard will be back with the team while he mourns the loss, an SNY source said, which, of course, is understandable.
Smith Jr. left New York upon learning of the family member's death. Smith Jr.'s close friend, rapper J. Cole, was among the friends and family in touch with Smith Jr. to offer support in the wake of the family member's death.
Frank Ntilikina is the next point guard on the Knicks' depth chart, so he could serve as the club's backup point guard during Smith Jr.'s absence. Smith Jr. had been backing up starter Elfrid Payton in the past two games.
The New York Daily News first reported the family member's death.
