Nick Van Exel is expected to join Knicks head coach David Fizdale's staff as an assistant, reports Stefan Bondy of the NY Daily News.
Van Exel, 46, served under Fizdale as an assistant with the Memphis Grizzlies and remained on the staff after Fizdale was fired this season. The former NBA All-Star has been coaching since 2009.
Bob Bender could also leave the staff in Memphis to join Fizdale as an assistant with the Knicks, according to Bondy.
It was reported earlier this week by Marc Berman of the NY Post that Keith Smart could also be joining Fizdale's staff.
Smart was an assistant coach along with Fizdale during their time with the Heat, and most recently, Smart was brought to the Grizzlies when Fizdale was awarded the head coaching job in 2016. Smart stayed with the Grizzlies this past season after Fizdale was fired.
The 53-year-old has head coaching experience as he spent two seasons with the Sacramento Kings (2011-13), and before, saw an interim stint with the Cavaliers during the 2002-03 season and a season with the Warriors in 2010. He owned a 93-170 record.
Mike Woodson, who interviewed for the Knicks' head coaching job, said he would join Fizdale's staff if asked. He is currently a Clippers assistant.
