Knicks president Steve Mills and new GM Scott Perry highlighted the team's young core and stressed the importance of defense during Perry's introductory press conference on Monday.
Mills singled out Kristaps Porzingis, the recently-signed Tim Hardaway, Jr., first-round pick Frank Ntilikina, and Willy Hernangomez as the Knicks' young core.
"Player development will be a focus of our organization," said Mills, who noted that he and Perry will "work in tandem in making sure we have a first-class operation."
The focus is on "youth, athleticism, and defense," added Mills, who said that everything the organization does "will fall back and will be supporting those principles."
Perry, who the Knicks hired away from the Sacramento Kings last week, said he and Mills are aligned in many ways and stressed the need for the Knicks to be "energetic and compete on a nightly basis."
"I think there's a lot to build around those young guys," Perry said about the Knicks' young core.
Head coach Jeff Hornacek echoed management's renewed focus on defense.
"We want to try to establish an identity," Hornacek said. "The identity has to become 'defense first.'"
