Knicks coach Jeff Hornaceck said prior to Wednesday's game with the Bulls that it's possible injured guard Tim Hardaway Jr. could return this weekend.
The 25-year-old was averaging 17.8 points per game after signing a four-year, $71 million contract prior to this season, but he has not played since Nov. 29 due to a stress injury to his left leg. He missed his 20th consecutive game on Wednesday night. New York has gone 8-11 in his absence.
"We'll see tomorrow how Tim is," Hornacek said. "We'll practice. He's been going on all the trips. So we'll see.
"He said before shootaround he feels good. Tim's itching to go. But we do have to listen to doctors. We've got to be careful with it. That's why he's been going through this gradual buildup ... so we'll just continue that. ... It should be sometime in the near future that we get Tim back."
Hardaway took part in a full-court game during Tuesday's practice, giving him hope that a return to action might be near.
"Right now we're close," Hardaway said. "But it doesn't matter what I think. It matters what the doctors say and what my training staff wants me to do after I get the news.
"No dates. Just when I said that (I'd come back on the road trip) it's because the majority of our games are on the road this month. It could be a home game, could be a road game. I've still got to get evaluated first. Once that's taken care of then I'm pretty sure we'll be able to give you all a timetable."
While Hardaway may be close to returning, guard Ramon Sessions' time with the Knicks may be nearing an end.
The New York Daily News reports that New York may waive the 31-year-old if a trade, which is the club's first choice, cannot be worked out. The Knicks seem intent on promoting G Trey Burke from their G-League team in Westchester, which would necessitate a roster move.
Signed this past summer to be the Knicks' starting point guard Sessions has played a total of 12 minutes in the club's last 10 games heading into Wednesday. He's averaging 3.7 points and has appeared in only 13 of New York's 40 games this season.
