First the NY Post reported that it was business operations guru Scott O'Neil, the Garden president, who superseded Donnie Walsh and pulled the trigger on the Warkentien hire.
MSG president Scott O'Neil, not team president Donnie Walsh, was the one to push James Dolan into hiring former Nuggets general manager Mark Warkentien, The Post has learned. The official announcement on Warkentien's hire is likely was made Saturday.Yet at practice, Walsh, himself, accepted a fair amount of responsibility for the hire.
"We didn't hire him for that reason," Walsh said after practice at MSG Training Center. "I didn't do it for that reason, no."Interesting indeed. I find it hard to believe that Walsh wouldn't have had any input on the hiring. What also isn't clear is the future of Glen Grunwald, an Isiah Thomas hire, who is respected by Walsh and occupies the role of senior vice president for basketball operations.
It doesn't hurt to have someone on the staff with inside information and a direct link to Anthony's camp, especially William "Worldwide Wes" Wesley. But this hire has as much to do with Warkentien's vast knowledge of the college game and the NBA as it does with the team's pursuit of Anthony.
