So you can understand the uneasiness, especially when other names are floating around, one being a name that makes Knicks fans cringe.
It is no secret that Walsh would like to hire Chris Mullin within the organization. Mullin would be a perfect fit in an upper management role, and is familiar I would say with Madison Square Garden. His alma mater had a pretty decent showing there yesterday.
Allan Houston, we know, is a favorite in the organization and has executive material written all over him, despite lacking experience. If you don't think H20 will be leading a team, if not this one, over the next few years, or think he wouldn't get the job done, then you're way too far on the outside looking in. Houston has the chops.
But the story that Yahoo broke yesterday is an important one, especially when you consider that it appears that Warketntien has a good relationship with Carmelo Anthony and camp. The man hasn't been part of a losing season in two decades of basketball.
Warkentien is a brilliant behind-the-scenes-type manager who quietly pulled off both the Allen Iverson trade with the 76ers and then the Iverson-for-Chauncey Billups trade with Detroit. The former NBA Executive of the Year still has strong ties with the Nuggets franchise and strong ties with Carmelo and CAA. Quite frankly, Walsh might be better off not officially hiring Warkentien, because then he couldn't, by tampering rules, work as a potential backchannel liaison. That's very important, I would think, and there is absolutely zero reason to believe that Warkentien wouldn't work on a deal with Nuggets brass along with Walsh, if the Knicks believe that they need to deal for Melo instead of waiting until free agency.
But make no mistake, as far as Walsh' extension it's obvious that Dolan is leery of getting burned again. It would seem that is far more about paranoia than anything else, especially if a hire like this gets them one step closer to the franchise's goal of winning a title.
All in all, Walsh deserves the chance to continue moving forward building this. The reconstruction following The Civil War took 14 years, Walsh has made basketball clean and watchable at Madison Square Garden again in just three with the chance to make sound roster improvements moving forward.
