When the Giants open their 2019 season Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys, they will have two quarterbacks available for the 4:25 p.m. kickoff at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

After practice Friday, head coach Pat Shurmur revealed New York's plans to start the campaign at quarterback, where veteran Eli Manning has been the offense's starter for the past 15 years.

As Shurmur noted throughout the preseason, most recently Aug. 23 after the Giants' 25-23 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, Manning remains Big Blue's starter -- at least to begin the regular season.

While all eyes have been on veteran Eli Manning and rookie Daniel Jones as the regular season approaches for the Giants, another quarterback development has unfolded over the course of the preseason.

The Giants are set to begin the regular season with Manning as the starter and Jones the backup, but the third spot at the position remains undetermined ahead of Saturday's 4 p.m. deadline for the 53-man roster.

Journeyman Alex Tanney and sophomore Kyle Lauletta have been in the thick of the race to third-string quarterback behind Manning and Jones, and the under-the-radar competition continued during Thursday's 31-29 road win over the New England Patriots.

Daniel Jones wrapped up a nearly perfect preseason with another nearly perfect game - or at least one perfect series in the Giants' preseason finale.

And that's likely the last anyone will see of the sixth-overall pick until the Giants are ready to make a quarterback switch and put an end to Eli Manning's Giants career.

In the meantime, there's another big quarterback decision coming up for Giants coach Pat Shurmur. We know he loves Jones. We know he thinks Jones has made a ton of progress this summer. And we know he thinks Jones is ready and able to play.

Everyone's talking about the New York Giants' quarterback controversy. Featuring a trusty veteran and an upstart draft pick, preseason reps may be the best way to figure out who makes the team, and who is let go.

Oh, you thought we were talking about Eli Manning and Daniel Jones? Nope.

The real quarterback competition on the Giants is the one that nobody is talking about -- Alex Tanney vs. Kyle Lauletta. The two quarterbacks are dueling for one spot on the roster as the third-string QB, but that doesn't mean the battle doesn't have high stakes.

Losing either quarterback would involve reneging on a team investment. Of course, most fans know that Lauletta was a fourth-round draft pick just last year, and at one point, the heir apparent to Manning. He even saw a small sample of game action last year, a rarity for a rookie QB on the Giants.

Football fans look forward to the release of each year's installment of the Madden NFL franchise, but Giants fans may want to play with a different team in this year's game.

The Madden NFL 20 player and team ratings were released on Monday, and the Giants have the lowest team rating in the NFC at 77. That's the second-lowest rating only in front of the Dolphins (74). Their NFC East rivals in the Eagles and Cowboys are rated much higher at 89 and 88 respectively.

The Giants' gem on their roster is RB Saquon Barkley, who led the Giants with a 91 overall (and was ranked the fifth-best running back in the game). Other than that, the ratings weren't too kind to the Giants.

For as many headlines as the Giants' pick of quarterback Daniel Jones made on draft night, he's just one of the players now.

"You don't say anything. He doesn't say anything. He comes into work every single day," safety Michael Thomas said, according to ESPN's Jordan Raanan, about how the team is accepting him. "So, nah, Daniel Jones is one of our teammates now. If he can help us win, he'll help us win like every other draft pick."
