Kyle Wilson

During the season,?Kristian Dyer?will be writing some weekly pieces for the blog, today, Dyer writes about Kyle Wilson and his readiness to step in if required.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. ? This is the year for Kyle Wilson and this might well be the game where the former first round pick steps into the spotlight.

The past two years in the league have been building blocks for Wilson, the No. 29 pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. When a player is taken in the first round, there are certain expectations that he will step in as a starter and been an immediate impact player. As such, Wilson was expected to come in and contribute right away.??And while he has played all 32 regular season games in the past two years including a dozen starts, Wilson hasn?t yet developed into the big time playmaker in the secondary that many thought he would become. But this year, Wilson looks and acts different as head coach Rex Ryan said that ?I think Kyle?s really improved in my opinion.?He had better be ready as this Sunday, with Darrelle Revis possibly being held out due to a concussion suffered in the Week 1 opener, it might be Wilson who rolls out onto the field.

While Darrelle Revis was cleared for some physical activity yesterday, today Revis ride the?exercise?bike during practice. ?It's still unknown as to whether or not Revis will play come Sunday, but Rex Ryan told the press that they have set a deadline for when they would make the call on their star cornerback's availability.

"By Saturday, we'd better know something, whether he's going [to play against Pittsburgh] or not," Ryan told reporters. ?"This coach would never put a player out on the field if there's a higher risk of him getting injured. There's no way in heck I'd do it."

On what Revis's threshhold for playing or not playing, Rex was absolute, "if he's not 100 percent, Darrelle won't play" Ryan said. "It's as simple as that."

Cornerback Kyle Wilson, chosen by the Jets in the first round of the 2010 draft, is beginning to live up to expectations. One of the team's question marks last year, he's made a marked improvement in his second season. Though still a backup, he saw 27 snaps (according to Bent's analysis) in the Week 1 game against the Cowboys and only gave up a single catch, a short pass on 3rd down that he tackled short of the first-down marker. Against the Jaguars, Wilson also had a big stop on 3rd down.

Much of his improvement is being attributed to the mentoring Revis gave him after last season. According to Rex Ryan:

"The big thing about Kyle is he hooked onto Revis, and Darrelle is pushing him. They trained together in the offseason, and that's huge for him," coach Rex Ryan said. "This guy has great ability. There's a reason we took him in the first round; he's starting to play to it."
Revis, too, had nothing but glowing things to say about the young corner:
