The Giants and their linebackers. There was a time when they were synonymous with one another and were the pride and heart of the organization.?These days they are, as the Boss says, "spare parts and broken hearts."

Of the ten LBs the Giants will have in camp this summer, only two were drafted by the team and none before the fifth round. The club has not invested a first round pick on a LB since Carl Banks back in 1984. Since then, they've pretty much gone with free agents, walk-ons and castoffs.

Perhaps one of the shining lights of the Giants defense has been the play of their linebackers, and specifically, the play of linebacker Jon Beason. Beason, who was acquired?from the Carolina Panthers at the beginning of October, has done a tremendous job at the middle linebacker position and he has gained a lot of attention from the media, fans and more importantly, the respect from his team.

"He walked in the door and like I said earlier, the guys gravitated to him and he has that type of personality, he?s that type of a leader," said linebackers coach Jim Herrmann. "He?s a very upbeat leader and it is.? He has an infectious personality.? Most great leaders are.? You see that in him.? To be able to walk into the door and play right away, that?s not easy."

Michael Boley was a productive outside linebacker for the Giants the past four seasons, especially down the stretch in 2011 ? the Giants? most recent Super Bowl winning season.

But football is a business, and with the imminent salary cap issues the Giants will face, Boley, who was due to earn $4.25 million in 2013, was released.

The move was not a total shock, but it now opens the door for the 25-year-old Jacquian Williams to slide into a starting role.

The Giants' have had a need at linebacker for the better part of a decade, but they haven't spent many high draft picks on the position. This year features a limited crop of linebackers with a lot of potential.

ILBs

1. Luke Kuechly - Kuechly is a tackling machine, but lacks big time athleticism.

Happy Birthday, Dad! And now, on to football stuff...

If I went back into the late 80s and transported a fan who was used to watching Lawrence Taylor, Carl Banks and Harry Carson into present times and made them watch a Giants game last year?well you get where I?m going with this.? For a franchise who used to have such a proud tradition of linebackers, the current landscape of this unit is bordering on ludicrous.

We?ll start with the good.? Michael Boley is not perfect, but he is, at the very least, a nice starting linebacker.? He was a smart, somewhat under-the-radar signing that has not paid huge dividends, but has provided the Giants with their best linebacker over the past couple of years.? Jonathan Goff was thrust into the starting middle linebacker role, and played better than expected in his first full season.? He is strong against the run and a solid overall player.
