Lineup Changes lineup changes

The Devils held an optional skate Saturday morning and newcomer Matt D'Agostini was a full participant. D'Agostini is expected to make his Devils debut tonight against the Panthers.

Via Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice:

Devils coach Pete DeBoer said D?Agostini will play right wing tonight, but he hadn?t decided his line combinations yet or which forward will come out of the lineup.

?The line combinations we?re not set in stone yet,? DeBoer said. ?We?re going to have another meeting after pre-game skate. So, we?ll decide on that this afternoon, , but he?s for me a top nine type forward, so we?re going to give him that opportunity.?

With no morning skate, the Devils were late to announce their lineup for tonight's game. Johan Hedberg will get the start in net despite his recent struggles and the recently called-up Cam Janssen will replace Stefan Matteau and join fellow Bash Brother Krys Barch in the lineup.

I imagine DeBoer's lineup decision led to a scene similar to this in the home locker room of the Prudential Center:

The Devils held an optional skate this morning, but coach Pete DeBoer revealed two lineup changes for tonight's game, one more interesting than the other. First, the fourth line gets a bit of a change with Tim Sestito getting the chance to dress:

Also, there will be some changes on defense, with a certain slow-footed Russian getting a night off.

With Ryan Carter sidelined by some form of upper-body injury (read: likely concussion), the Devils suddenly have a hole on their third line. Enter the Devils' apparent Mr. Fix It this season, Stefan Matteau.

Via Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice:

Rookie Stefan Matteau is skating in Carter?s place on the third line with Stephen Gionta and Steve Bernier. Matteau, who will turn 19 on Saturday, has been a healthy scratch the last three games.

Alexei Ponikarovsky joined the Devils for his first skate since rejoining the team via trade Wednesday night. In Friday's morning skate, during which Pete DeBoer generally ices the lines that will start that night's game, Ponikarovsky was on the left wing of top centerman Travis Zajac.

This isn't all that surprising -- all you have to do is look at the players that have rotated through that spot thus far this season to understand the decision. DeBoer has tried Stefan Matteau, Ryan Carter, Bobby Butler, Jacob Josefson, Adam Henrique and Dainius Zubrus at first line left wing. Outside of Zubrus, Matteau has gotten the longest look there, but mostly for five or six shifts a game max. In a post I'll (hopefully) get to later today, I'll go deeper into the benefits on the Poni trade, but this is chief among them. I don't know if he'll spent the entire game there, especially if the Devils get off to a poor start again, but I imagine he'll get a pretty long look.

The Devils got back to a full practice today, so I just wanted to pass on a couple notes, starting with how Pete DeBoer plans to deploy Martin Brodeur and Johan Hedberg this week.

And the fact that Ponikarovsky is expected to be in the lineup tomorrow against Philly.

Besides the Stefan Matteau news -- which we'll delve a little deeper into later today -- the other item of importance out of today's morning skate was the continued benching of Henrik Tallinder.

https://twitter.com/TGfireandice/status/299545653523136513

Pete DeBoer has stated and shown a willingness to rotate in all of his defensemen so far this season. Well, except for Peter Harrold. Sorry, Pete. So the question now becomes, how long will Tallinder sit for? Probably until Marek Zidlicky gets pulled. As more than a few of you pointed out on Twitter, Zidlicky's ice time has dipped considerably since the Islanders loss last Thursday. After bottom out at 19:12 and playing mostly 22-plus minutes a night on the first line, Zidlicky has been demoted to the third unit over the last three games. He's also seen his ice time drop from 18:26 to 16:30 to 13:19 in the last three games, respectively.

Coming off their third straight OT loss, the Devils got right back to work Friday before heading off to Pennsylvania for Saturday's game against Sidney Crosby and the Penguins.

Picking up where they left off last night, Adam Henrique was skating on the left side of the Devils' top line alongside Travis Zajac and Ilya Kovalchuk. It was a little surprising considering Pete DeBoer admitted last night that he prefers to play Henrique at center. So why slot him in at LW right now?

It'll be a big night for the future of the Devils(and for guys named Adam, too) on Thursday when Adam Henrique and Adam Larsson get their first crack at playing this season. Henrique's been sidelined for two months following hand surgery. He, like Larsson, began the lockout playing with Albany of the AHL before getting hurt during a game in November.

"I thought we did a great job as a group of everyone stepping up while he was out," coach Pete DeBoer said Thursday, "but hes a big part of our team obviously and you can start to slot people in the right spots when hes in the lineup."

While Henrique will likely eventually slot in on the second line between Patrik Elias and David Clarkson, he'll start Thursday's game on the fourth unit, skating with Krys Barch and former Albany teammate Matt Anderson. Don't expect that to stick though.

As we wait for Bobby Butler to clear waivers or be claimed by another team, the general expectation is Mattias Tedenby will be recalled to take his roster spot (UPDATE: Devils confirm he'll be recalled at noon). Judging by the morning skate, he'll take LW on the second line with Patrik Elias at C and David Clarkson at RW.

Also, looks like Adam Larsson will be among the inactives tonight, meaning Henrik Tallinder will likely be on the third defensive pairing.

We've spent the past couple days talking about guys like David Clarkson and Bobby Butler, but we all know the players that butter Pete DeBoer's bread. With that in mind, this upcoming nugget from ESPN's Crosschecks Blog got me thinking not necessarily about the players mentioned, but who will be paired with them. Hmmm...

Via Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.com:

Henrique, DeBoer said during our Monday interview, was still 10-to-14 days away from being healthy, but once that?s the case, he figures his two main offensive pairs up front will be Ilya Kovalchuk with Travis Zajac on one line, and Henrique with veteran Patrik Elias on the other.

"Those are our two pairs at the top that I want to keep together, but who rides shotguns for those guys are the jobs that are up for grabs," DeBoer said.First of all, let's be clear that Zajac and Henrique could easily swap places throughout the year. While I think they both fit will with their respective partners at this time, it's not often you see the top two lines on any NHL team will struggles to score (and the Devils will) stay together for an entire season. With that said, I came up three sets of line combinations that I think work well together, assuming the Zajac-Kovy and Elias-Henrique pairings. Two things should be noted before we go forward: I'm leaving out a fourth line that I assume will alternate between four players (Bernier, Carter, Janssen, Gionta) and I'm listing Kovy at RW because that appears to be where DeBoer is comfortable using him.

Pete DeBoer has made it clear the Devils won't change their style to offset the losses of Zach Parise and Petr Sykora. But that means the Devils will need to find offense from somewhere unexpected. Last season, it was David Clarkson who stepped up with a career-high 30 goals and with the Devils needing more scoring up front, it's fair to wonder whether Clarkson deserves a chance on the top line.

Via Rich Chere of The Star-Ledger:

Travis Zajac, who figures to be the Devils? top center, believes there should be no doubts about Clarkson being a first-liner.

Jacob Josefson and Matt Taormina have been sent down to Albany over the All Star Break to keep them fresh as Jacob Josefson has just come back from a broken collarbone injury. I would expect both to be back in the lineup after the All Star Break.

Patrik Elias will not be in the lineup tonight for the Devils as they play their match of the season against the New York Rangers at the Prudential Center. Elias did not practice today or yesterday due to the illness. Travis Zajac will be centering the 2nd line in place of Elias. Carter will move up to the 3rd line to take Zajac's spot.

Alex Urbom and Matt Taormina have been called up from Albany to fill in for Andy Greene who is going to be sidelined for the next 4 weeks with a non-displaced toe fracture. Martin Brodeur has been given the start Tuesday in Toronto as the Devils hope to end their 4 game skid. Brodeur was pulled in his last start against the Minnesota Wild after giving 3 first period goals. That was 1st period was the 2nd time in 2 straight games where Brodeur had given up 3 first period goals.

Hopefully he doesn't give up 3 again in Toronto otherwise it'll be 5 straight losses and 4 straight losses on the road.

Martin Brodeur is going to be getting his second consecutive start when the Devils take on the Lightning. Brodeur allowed three goals against Buffalo Wednesday night. Despite giving up 3 goals, Brodeur made many big saves when he needed to.

As per Tom Gulitti, Johan Hedberg will get the start in net today against the Carolina Hurricanes. Martin Brodeur has not been reported injured. This is probably a way to keep Brodeur as fresh as possible through out the season. This really should not come as a surprise to any one.
