GEICO SportsNite: Yankees lose 00:01:12
Justine Ward talks to Brett Gardner, Didi Gregorius and Joe Girardi about the Yankees' 7-4 extra-innings loss to the Orioles.

Bryan Mitchell allowed three runs in the top of the 11th inning after the Yankees didn't score with the bases loaded in the 10th inning as New York lost the rubber game of a three-game series to the Baltimore Orioles, 7-4, Sunday at Yankee Stadium. >> Box score

The Yankees loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning, but Starlin Castro grounded into a fielder's choice and Aaron Judge struck out to end the frame.

Mitchell (1-1) surrendered a go-ahead two-out single to Mark Trumbo that gave Baltimore a 5-4 lead, then Welington Castillo drove in two runs with a single to right. Logan Verrett (1-0) pitched a scoreless 11th inning for the Orioles.

The Yankees trailed 4-2 in the ninth inning before Didi Gregorius hit a game-tying two-run single off Donnie Hart. New York had runners on second and third with two outs, but Hart struck out Chris Carter to end the frame. The Yankees went 3-for-13 with runners in scoring position.

The Mets have trade RHP Logan Verrett to the Orioles for cash considerations, the team announced.

The trade frees up a 40-man roster spot for recently re-signed OF Yoenis Cespedes.

Verrett, 26, had a 5.20 ERA and 1.56 WHIP while striking out 66 batters in 91 2/3 innings (12 starts, 23 relief appearances) for the Mets last season.

He had a 3.03 ERA and 0.87 WHIP in 38 2/3 innings for the Mets in 2015.

New York Mets RHP Logan Verrett's agents are trying to get his demotion rescinded and have the team place him on the major league disabled list, according to ESPN's Adam Rubin.

Verrett was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Saturday after he allowed eight runs in 2 2/3 innings in a start on Friday. He complained about a stiff neck after his start, according to Rubin, and assistant GM John Ricco told reporters on Monday that Verrett remains sore, however the team optioned him to the minors to free up a roster spot instead of placing him on the 15-day disabled list.

Ricco said an MRI on Verrett's neck did not reveal anything significant, but a request was made for a second opinion, according to Rubin.

The Mets have activated infielder Jose Reyes off the disabled list and called up RHP Gabriel Ynoa from Triple-A Last Vegas, the team announced Saturday.

Logan Verrett gave up five runs in the fourth inning and Jay Bruce was thrown out at the plate for the final out in the ninth inning as the Mets' rally fell short in a 6-5 loss to the Tigers Saturday night at Comerica Park.

In case you missed it…

  • The Mets trailed 6-1 after Verrett gave up five runs in the fourth. He hit a batter and allowed four hits in the inning, including a two-run single by Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Jon Niese relieved Verrett and gave up a two-run single to Miguel Cabrera, but the runs were charged to Verrett.

  • Wilmer Flores was 2-for-4 with two RBIs; Bruce and Curtis Granderson homered.
  • The Mets had three singles off Francisco Rodriguez in the ninth, by Bruce, Alejandro De Aza and Travis d'Arnaud. Bruce headed for home on d'Arnaud's short single to right fielder J.D. Martinez, but was called out and replays showed he barely missed the plate on his slide and was tagged out by catcher Saltamacchia.
  • The Mets had 14 hits, but hit into three double plays, were 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position and failed to take advantage of three Detroit errors.

"It's definitely frustrating, but what are you going to do?" Flores said after the game.

Collins and players on win 00:06:30
Mets manager Terry Collins and players Neil Walker, Logan Verrett, and Michael Conforto discuss the win over the Phillies.

Logan Verrett has thrown six scoreless innings in each of his two spot starts filling in for Jacob deGrom.

Verrett allowed no runs and six hits, striking out four batters and walking just one in an 11-1 win over the Phillies on Tuesday.

"He stepped up and gave us exactly what we needed," Terry Collins said after Tuesday's win. "It means a lot to the whole club. We know there's going to be a day where someone shows up sick who's supposed to pitch, and hopefully this guy's rested enough. If you need somebody, he can step in and do the job."

In case you missed it...

  • Logan Verrett turned in another sterling outing filling in for Jacob deGrom, tossing six scoreless innings. The right-hander has a 2.36 ERA in six Major League starts. Verrett also doubled in the top of the fifth for his first big league hit.
  • Neil Walker went deep twice on Tuesday and has five homers in his last five games. He leads New York with six home runs and has hit three as a right-handed batter already this season. He entered 2016 with six career long-balls from the right side.
  • Michael Conforto, Yoenis Cespedes, Lucas Duda and Curtis Granderson joined the home run parade for the Mets, who have hit 17 home runs through the first five games of this road trip. Duda and Walker's blasts were back-to-back shots, the second consecutive game they've done so.
  • David Wright doubled and scored on Conforto's home run in the first, extending his streak of reaching base safely to 21 straight games. All 11 of New York's runs on Tuesday came courtesy of the longball.
  • Of the 33 runs they Mets have scored on this road trip, 26 have come via the home run (79 percent).

The Mets were well aware they would need to go beyond their five starters over the course of this season, but they certainly couldn't have expected that to happen so quickly.

Logan Verrett goes for another impressive performance in place of Jacob deGrom on Tuesday night.

New York (6-6) entered the season with expectations of returning to the World Series, and that's mostly due to a rotation that includes deGrom, Matt Harvey, Noah Syndergaard, Steven Matz and veteran Bartolo Colon.

David Wright slugged a pair of solo homers and Noah Syndergaard allowed one run over seven innings in the Mets 5-2 win over the Phillies.

Noah Syndergaard turned in another ace-like performance and David Wright hit two solo homers as the Mets reached the .500 mark with a 5-2 win over the Phillies on Monday at Citizens Bank Park >> Read the full AP recap at SNY.TV.

  • Syndergaard continued his dominant start for the Mets, tossing seven innings of one-run ball. He allowed five hits, walked two and struck out eight. Through his first three starts, Syndergaard is 2-0 with a 0.90 ERA, 29 strikeouts and four walks in 20 innings.
  • The Mets hit four more home runs on Monday with Wright leading the way with a pair. Lucas Duda and Neil Walker also went deep, going back-to-back in the eighth inning. The blasts gave New York 11 homers in its last four games, whereas the Mets had only two homers in their first eight.
  • Wright's two-homer game was his first in almost three years (June 20, 2013, against the Braves). He has now reached base safely in 20 straight games dating back to last year.
  • Walker's solo shot was his team-leading fourth of the season.
  • In addition to his solo homer, Duda drove in the Mets' second run with an opposite-field double in the sixth inning. It was his second straight two-RBI game.

Tim Reilly: It's only been three starts and I'm already running out of things to say about Syndergaard. With Matt Harvey struggling and Jacob deGrom dealing with his lat injury and family at home, Syndergaard has surpassed both as the must-watch pitcher on this staff. What I liked most about his outing was that it followed Steven Matz's stellar performance on Sunday. That's what the Mets want to see. Putting together starts like these - one after the other - is what can (and hopefully will) make this rotation special.

Mets manager Terry Collins used RH reliever Jim Henderson during Wednesday's game despite the fact that Henderson threw 34 pitches on Tuesday night.

Henderson entered a scoreless game in relief of Logan Verrett in the seventh inning and proceeded to allow a single to Martin Prado before walking Justin Bour and J.T. Realmuto. At that point, Collins removed him and replaced him with Hansel Robles.

Henderson, 33, missed the majority of the last two seasons due to shoulder surgery.
