Louis Murphy

Heading into training camp, one of the themes of the 2013 New York Giants has been the upcoming reliance on a few inexperienced players to significantly contribute on both sides of the ball.

On offense in particular ? looking past Eli Manning, Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz of course ? a few young guns will be looked upon to shoulder the load.

And offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride is confident that these young guns will come through.

With Victor Cruz?s return to Big Blue official, the Giants can easily be placed into the argument of having the best receiving corps in the NFL.

Now, Cruz would have likely been here anyway had he not signed the five-year, $43 million contract extension, but a happy Victor Cruz means a productive, salsa-dancing Victor Cruz.

I wrote earlier this offseason that the Giants need Cruz in the mix for the receiving corps to reach its full potential, and that is now the case.

Update - 12:24 p.m.: Ramses Barden has re-signed with the Giants.

He has already joined the Giants on the field for practices.

?I?m happy to be back,? Barden said. ?This is where I wanted to be and now I?m here. I was out there listening to the calls, getting back into the rhythm of the cadence, enjoying the camaraderie and absorbing everything. I remember everything; I?ve had four years to soak it all up. I?m happy to be back on the field. I feel great. I expect the best.?

With neither Victor Cruz nor Hakeem Nicks in attendance at Giants off-season team activities, Eli Manning has had no choice but to?rely on the younger wide receivers.

Among them: second and third-year players Reuben Randle and Jerrel Jernigan, as well as free-agent addition Louis Murphy.

Victor Cruz's contract negotiations continue to keep the wideout away from the field and Hakeem Nicks opted not to attend voluntary organized team activities, but Eli Manning remains unmoved.

Following Day 1 of OTAs Wednesday, the Giants quarterback displayed no concerns about not having his No. 1 or 2 receivers out there with him on the field. In fact, Nicks' absence should have been expected, Manning said.

"There was no reason to think he wasn?t going to be here," Manning said. "Right now I?m just worrying about myself going out there executing, the guys who are here, trying to make everybody better, up to speed on what we?re trying to do and get the young guys involved and get them caught up to speed on everything going on and try to get better. That?s all we?re working on."
In place of Nicks and Cruz was free-agent addition Louis Murphy, second-year wideout Reuben Randle and third-year pro Jerrel Jernigan, who last week earned praise from Manning and offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride.

The Giants are preparing for their next reality check. You know, the one that will see how deep their WR corp is. With Victor Cruz still exercising all his options in his contract negotiations and Hakeem Nicks still rehabbing from foot and knee injuries, the Giants are using these early workouts to gauge the ability of their other receivers.

So, did Eli Manning like what he saw today from the back of the depth chart?

"Yeah. I hit Louis (Murphy) on a deep one. I got Rueben (Randle) in there. I got (Jerrel) Jernigan some catches. We?re getting everybody in there getting them a lot of reps, getting on time with them. We?re always going to get better. Whoever is on the field, we?re going to expect them to go out there and play at a high level. So I think the more guys you have who are experienced and ready to play different positions, the better off we?re going to be."
Jernigan, entering his third season, has played little and produced less. He was pinpointed recently by OC Kevin Gilbride as one of the players the Giants would be seeking to turn the corner on their career this summer.

Assume for a second that the Giants work out a long-term extension for star wideout Victor Cruz.

And also assume that Hakeem Nicks can stay healthy for an entire season ? a big assumption certainly.

But if the above scenarios occur coupled with new roles and additions, the Giants could have one of the top receiving corps in the NFL next season.

(Murphy is) an interesting guy. He gives us a different dimension in our offense. If we have the same guys, if we have (Hakeem) Nicks back healthy and we have Cruz back, this guy gives you a deep threat that we haven?t had. We haven?t had a guy who can run like this guy.

The Giants have signed free agent WR Louis Murphy to a one-year deal. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

From PFT: A fourth-round pick in 2009, Murphy spent three years with the Raiders before being traded to the Panthers. He showed promise as a rookie, and he actually improved his production in his second season. But Murphy became largely forgotten in 2011.

The Giants will be entertaining free agent WR Louis Murphy today. Why, you ask? Why not? Explore every option. Isn't that the Jerry Reese way?

Murphy has always been fast (he was drafted by Oakland, who used to draft players solely based on 40 times, it seemed) but he hasn't taken full advantage of his opportunities in the NFL. After his promising start with the Raiders (75 catches for 1,130 yards and 6 TDs in his first 2 seasons), he leveled out and was traded to Carolina, where he caught only 25 passes for 336 yards and 1 TD last year.
