Update: 11:56AM: Barry Melrose has apparently said on ESPN that Staal will be playing today.

Original Post: 9:47AM: In the NY Post, Larry Brooks writes that he wouldn't be surprised if Marc Staal makes his season debut this week against the Panthers or the Penguins.

Staal has been cleared for contact and told the NHL Network yesterday that he was feeling better.

On the MSG pregame show last night, Marc Staal spoke with Sam Rosen about his recovery.

Staal remarked:

"I feel like it's pretty close. Before I didn't have any desire or motivation to come to the rink, I wasn't feeling so great. Now that I am back on the ice watching the team travel and being around the guys you wanna get back on the ice and start playing the game again."
On his conditioning, he said "I'm starting to feel like I am getting into good shape I don't think you are every in game shape when you are practicing, you need to get back into the flow of the season. I am feeling pretty well and when everything is in line we can step back on the ice.

In the NY Post, Larry Brooks writes that Marc Staal could be cleared for contact this week and that if all goes well, he could make his season debut within the next two weeks.

Staal is expected to meet with doctors today, or early this week, to determine the next step in his return from a concussion.

Contact is the last real step towards coming back but Staal also needs his strength and conditioning back up to where it needs to be. I have thought that the first week after the all-star break would be the earliest we would see Staal if he was cleared for contact this week. Either way, it looks like Staal could be back sooner rather than later.

At NHL.com, Dave Lozo spoke with Marc Staal who said that he would like to play in the Winter Classic a week from tomorrow.

Staal said though that he won't rush back and in the case of his brother returning for the Winter Classic last year, "It's a little different with your hand than your brain."

"It's something I'm not going to step into if I'm not ready," Staal said. "It's just not worth it to put yourself into a position like that if you're not ready, physically or mentally. It sucks that I probably might not get a crack at it. It is what it is."
He could be cleared for contact as early as tomorrow when he plans to meet with doctors.

Marc will only have to wait a couple of years until the Rangers host their own Winter Classic. All Marc needs to worry about his feeling good as he ramps up his workouts and gets cleared for contact.

"Every day I am getting stronger and feelings stronger on my skates. It was a pretty miserable month there, but starting to get to normal life again is a pretty good thing. There is no specific date yet, once I feel like I am in good enough shape to play in an NHL game, and if everything is feeling good, we will decide. When we get down the line a little more we will narrow it down."

Update: 12:50PM

While talking about concussions and a possible return to Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants, Marc Staal said that he has learned from others who have dealt with concussions and will take his time in returning:

?Every situation is different,? Staal said. ?The biggest thing is you have to know yourself when you?re ready to play. It?s different for everybody. You wait until the workouts get harder then you see what happens after that. (Crosby?s situation) has obviously shed a lot of light on it. Guys are being more careful with these types of injuries. It?s not fun going through it.?
Crosby has become the face of concussions in the NHL. What happens next with him is going to be very interesting as he passed all of his tests, was cleared for contact, skated another five weeks and then came back and was awesome. The Rangers won't want the same with Marc Staal and while he continues to skate, work out and maybe get cleared for contact soon, it could still be a while until he comes back. Same goes for Michael Sauer who isn't with the team and hasn't really been heard from since he was concussed.

After his skate in St. Louis today, Marc Staal told Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants that today was the hardest he has skated since returning to the ice after being shutdown for the month of October.

Staal says that the waiting to see if the concussion symptoms reappear is the hardest part of this process:

It?s kind of a wait-and-see how I?m feeling, but with the way my work has gone, the rest of the day should go pretty well. The unknown is the hardest part. You?re waiting for things to happen and when it does, it?s really frustrating.?
Staal said that the next step was working with strength and conditioning coach Reg Grant in the weight room.

Earlier today Marc Staal met with the media for the first time since right before the season started.

Staal told Larry Brooks in the NY Post that he thinks he can return this season:

"based on my rate of improvement over the last month, I feel I?ll be back [this season]. I have to make sure I?m healthy, but that?s the plan.?
Staal said that the month he had off helped him, but that it sapped his conditioning and strength which he needs to get back.

During TSN's Insider Trading segment, Bob McKenzie said that Marc Staal is one week into his light training program and that if there are no setbacks, he thinks that Staal could be back some time in the New Year.

It is a little vague, but I think that what McKenzie is going for is that Staal will return THIS season, and possibly sooner than we think. They are going to be cautious though and I think that the earliest we see Staal is the all-star break which is basically two full months from now.

At NHL.com, Dan Rosen spoke with Carolina Hurricanes center Eric Staal about his brother.

"It's a process -- a slow process, but it's a process," Eric said. "He will be back. He's going to play again. His career in hockey isn't over. It's going to take some time, but he needs to make sure he's thinking about himself and his future, making sure he's fully 100-percent healthy, because if you don't, those things can linger for a long time. He has, and now it's about being smart about what you're doing to get back."
Eric also added "Right now he's on the right track, and it's about staying on that track."

This team doesn't use excuses for anything, and frankly, I like it. Everyone deals with issues during the season and the season goes on, it doesn't stop because your best defenseman is hurt. I love Marc Staal, and am glad that the Rangers are letting him recover on his own terms, but they really do need to plan as if they won't see him soon and let other guys get as much ice time and?experience?as they can.
