Marc Staal spoke with the media on Friday and said (NYR):

  • How are you feeling, "good. Good summer and trained hard. Probably as healthy and strong as I have been in a long time. Looking forward to camp."
  • On his conversation with AV, "I think that as much as you want to learn from the past, it's important for us to turn the page and get by last year and come into camp with a fresh, optimistic, approach. It's definitely a lot longer of an offseason than we are used to. Coming into camp I feel a good energy about our group and the way we feel going into camp."
  • On being able to train this summer, "it was nice to take 3/3 1/2 weeks off with nothing really holding me back and waiting for things to heal. That got me excited to get into the summer and training and hopefully it pays dividends coming into camp and the season."
  • On a chip on your shoulder, "I think so. We are a group that, me and a lot of other guys have a feeling that we need to prove ourselves over again. With the expectations of our group the last few years you have that feeling where you are supposed to be there at a high level and we were last year and everyone is excited to come to camp and have that chip where we know the way we can play and it's about performing and doing it on the ice more consistently this year and we are looking forward to it."

4/28/16: Marc Staal said on breakup day that he isn't dealing with any injuries or issues and that it will be the first time in 5-6 years he will have a summer with no physical ailments. (NYR)

  • In 2015 Staal had surgery to remove a bone chip when it was also discovered that he had a ligament tear in his ankle.
  • In 2014 Staal dealt with a concussion during the season and then a short summer with the Rangers going to the Stanley Cup Final.
  • In 2013 Staal was dealing with his eye issue.
  • When the lockout shortened 2013 season, started, Staal said "I trained really hard all summer long going into camp, or what should have been camp. I'm miles ahead of where I was last year starting the season.
  • Staal deal with his concussion in the summer of 2011 and into that season.

Staal said that he is looking forward to getting 3-4 months of training in before the season which has "been rare the last bunch of years." (NYR)

Staal just finished the first-year of his six-year contract extension that has a cap hit of $5.7 million.

Adam Rotter: It was only a few years ago, after his first concussion but before the eye injury, where Marc Staal was the Rangers top defender and looked to be the player that Ryan McDonagh has become. Injuries have hurt Staal the last few years and I think as result his play has dipped. At times he can still be the All-Star player that he was but it's not consistent. Hopefully the extra rest this summer and being healthy will get Staal back to playing at a high level.

Marc Staal returned to Rangers practice today and spoke about the back spams that have been bothering him lately. (NYR)

Staal said that things have really "calmed down" the last 4-5 days and that he plans to play tomorrow unless something unexpectedly goes "drastically wrong."

He said that he felt good going through drills today and asked if he was concerned about the issue said "when it happened the first time I wasn't quite over it yet and then I got sick there and dehydrated and laying in bed for 24 hours. It just flared up on me again but I think we are over the hump and confident that it's behind us."

On the injury, Staal said "It's the spine, where if it's a little out of line and something happens and it moves where it doesn't want me to move it spasms up on me and the muscles lock up and I can't put my socks on in the morning. It's gotten way better in the last four days."

The New York Rangers' first game without Henrik Lundqvist was a pleasant surprise against the top team in hockey. The second might have had them saying enough is enough.

There's at least one more game separating their No. 1 goaltender from a return, and it's Tuesday night in Buffalo against a Sabres team seeking its first five-game point streak in nearly four years.

Lundqvist is expected to return from a neck injury this weekend - either Saturday in Detroit or Sunday at home against Pittsburgh - while Rick Nash is also nearing a return. He'll miss his 20th consecutive game with a bone bruise in his leg, but he's finally returned to practice on a no-contact basis.

Once that is sorted out we will figure the lineup out."
  • Could a defenseman be called up, "I'm not going to call up a defenseman at this point. Marc's wife is being induced tomorrow morning. Asked about his defensemen yesterday, Alain Vigneault said:

  • Ryan McDonagh: "I firmly believe that Ryan is on the right track as far as skating with the puck and making better decisions with it."
  • Keith Yandle: "I think Keith is coming along, there will always be moments in games where Keith is going to make a low percentage play that could be high reward but for the most part I have really liked his last 3-4 games since the Boston games, he has been more effective. "
  • Dylan McIlrath: "Dylan is a young D going through the process."

On Dan Boyle, Marc Staal and Dan Girardi, Vigneault said that he believes they can "be a lot better than they have shown us. Our transition and our breakouts start with Marc and Dan and Boyler and those guys, we need those guys to handle the puck better, no doubt."

Vigneault said that at this point in the season the injuries that Girardi, Staal and McDonagh had at the end of last year shouldn't be bothering them.

He said that the Rangers defense "will get better" and that if Marc Staal knows to make a better play than he did against Colorado when he forced a pass to Kevin Hayes and it led to a goal against.

    • How different was last night than Saturday, "much better in all areas of the game. Just our compete and work ethic and winning battles and playing the way we want to play was much better than the previous game for sure."
    • How hard is it to skate away when the Pens play dirty, "it's not easy. You have to remind yourself what can happen if you do, undisciplined penalties, putting that team on the PP, emotional game where things happen and sometimes it's tough to keep your cool but for the most part we did a pretty good job of that in this series and not putting ourselves behind the 8 ball with taking and killing penalties."
    • Did you sit on the lead last night, "We are going into the third and maybe the first 4-5 minutes we had good shifts in their end but as soon as they started to push on us we weren't able to get out of our zone clean or offensive pressure. We were defending a lot more in the third period, we stayed with it and they will come in their building and their fans are into it and we limited their Grade A opportunities to score but when they did Hank was there to make stops and we were able to come away with a fun."
    • On defending Crosby and Malkin, "that is a coaching challenge, for us on the bench, last night we were playing with everyone and rotating us pretty well and trying to get us out against those guys. Tough matchup on the road but we are six capable defensemen and I don't think any of them are worried in any different situations."
    • Is Ulf making those calls, "yea."
    • Will the ugliness carry over, "it's gotten chippier as the games have gone on. I think sometimes those things can boil over but when you are trying to win you can do those things and get into trouble. You don't want to start parading to the penalty box, we try to play whistle to whistle and keep our discipline and keep playing 5 on 5."
    • On winning on the road, "I don't know, it's definitely something we have been comfortable with. I think we play just as hard on the road and a lot of guys on our team thrive on keeping a building quiet and coming out with a win. We enjoy going in and coming out with a win and quieting the fans and doing our job. We are comfortable and hopefully it continues."
    • On this year vs last year in terms of pressure, "the expectations are a lot different than last year, I don't think anyone expected us to do much besides the guys in the room. It's a different type of pressure, it's early on in the playoffs and we are up 2-1 and with our group our focus is on each game. When you try looking at the big picture you get yourself into trouble. Our focus is on tomorrow and getting another win. We are trying to keep that mentality."
    • How important is tomorrow, "you prefer not to play every series to 7. When a team is on the ropes you want to finish them off, we want to get in and get another win and a stranglehold on the series. A huge game tomorrow and excited for the challenge of trying to win another game."

With the Rangers playing the Penguins in the first round of the playoffs, it means that the Rangers will likely matchup Marc Staal against Sidney Crosby.

Crosby said that Staal will try to make it tough for him, just like any defensemen would, and that he needs to compete every shift to try and create offense. (Pens)

He said that he remembers how Staal played him last year and that the Rangers continued to defend him the same way during the regular season. (PPG)
