Marian Gaborik and Brad Richards

Marian Gaborik scored his 39th goal of the season last night after Brad Richards fixed a broken play and fed Gaborik who put the puck past Carey Price.

Mike Keenan said on MSG that there is a simple reason why the two of them are working:

It's called chemistry. They have a good skill set but they read off of each other real well and that is why they are getting results
John Tortorella told Sam Rosen before the game that Marian Gaborik is doing a better job of giving Brad Richards the puck and then finding a spot to get open, "Gabby wants the puck and instead of being a one on one guy, he gives it to Richie and gets open without the puck. For both of them it's very important, it's the guy without the puck. They have a sense of confidence together and hopefully it continues"

John Tortorella said on HNL last night, "It's one of the greatest goals I have ever seen. It's one hell of a goal, but they can't get scored on twice by the fourth line."

He also added, "They gotta play a little defense and they are both capable of doing that."

Before the game last Saturday, John Tortorella spoke about why he separated Brad Richards and Marian Gaborik.

He told ESPN New York that both plays like to have the puck and that:

"They both want the puck, they're both good with the puck, but sometimes the puck isn't big enough for the both of them," he said.
Elliotte Freidman wrote at CBC: "It's important to make sure guys who need to carry the puck are partnered with those who don't mind playing without it. Look at Brad Richards and Marian Gaborik. Both love to carry it, and that doesn't necessarily work."

Update: 7:49AM: John Tortorella told the NY Post, ?I can?t say we definitely want that to happen,? he said. ?It looks great on paper, and the signing, but tapes talk to me and watching guys play, that talks to me, and that?s what I?m deciphering now."

Richards said that he hasn't been feeling the game so far and thinks playing with 2/3 of the Pack Line could help him:

?I?m not seeing the game the way I should be, and when that?s the case and things feel they?re moving quicker than they should, sometimes getting me to grind it out is the best way to get me going, and Torts knows that,? Richards told The Post. ?Playing with Cally and Dubi, working down low and having zone time, I believe that will be good for me and good for the team.
Original Post: At practice yesterday, John Tortorella split up Marian Gaborik and Brad Richards for the first time that wasn't in the middle of the game.

This was very encouraging last night. Gabby was just flying all over the place and Richards is just as good as advertised. His shot is so underrated and his vision is terrific. Derek Stepan didn't look out of place in that spot and I expect them to keep working well together.

The Rangers waited a year to get Richards to center Marian Gaborik. They will now likely spend the better part of this season finding the most effective left wing to play with Gaborik and Richards. John Tortorella will grow tired of thinking and talking about it, and he will not be alone.

Chris Botta of the NY Times

People want Derek Stepan in that spot, Brandon Dubinsky is there, but most of us don't want him there, and no one seems confident that Wojtek Wolski can play there. Sean Avery's name will be brought up a ton and that he goes offsides and kills rushes won't change. Ruslan Fedotenko is an option, Mike Rupp could be as well. Maybe Mats Zuccarello. It is tiring to talk about this already and will only grow more so if they get into the game of musical left wings.?

As much as I don't like it, it makes sense to get a look at them together after a week of practice and see if there is anything there with Dubi or any of the other lines before they get changed. I still think that the Pack Line and the Prust, Boyle, Feds line should be together, but these are the players that John Tortorella wants to see play together right now.

After the game, John Tortorella told the media that Richards played his game, ?He made some good plays with the puck,? John Tortorella said of Richards. ?His passing ability, that?s a big part of his game. So, I thought that line created a lot of offense. Hopefully, we?ll see, we?ll try some people along the way here and just see how it goes. I thought Richards played well.?

I was impressed last night with Richards. Gabby had his legs moving and was skating like he should and Wolski fit in well with the two of them. But Richards, man, he was exactly what the Rangers needed. Excellent speed and skating, his passing was awesome and his shot from the point is underrated. At one point last night he skated behind the Devils net showing off #19 on his back and all I could think of was that this was the guy the Rangers thought they were getting when they signed Scott Gomez. They got the real thing now.

At ESPN.com, Scott Burnside talked with Marian Gaborik about his preperation for this coming season. Gabby says that playing with Brad Richards is something that he is looking forward to:

?I?m looking forward to this. He?s one of the best playmakers in the league,? Gaborik said. ?He?s looking to get you the puck and you?re going to get it in the right time and in the right spot. He?s a good skater, I?m a good skater,? he said.
And I can't wait to see it. The first time that Richie hits Gabby for a goal is gonna be awesome. We will get our first look tonight!

?I?ll put it to you this way, the most important thing for Gabby in playing with Brad Richards and Richards playing with Gabby is that Gabby doesn?t have to have the puck all the time. And I think that?s what happened a lot last year. He had the puck a lot,? Tortorella said Tuesday.

?I think it?s important that he doesn?t have it. He?s going to be a better player without it if it?s going to work with Richie and be going to holes, just always giving and going. I think that?s very important,? the coach said.

At USA Today, Brad Richards said that he was looking forward to playing with Marian Gaborik because Gabby, like Richards, is a left handed shot.

"With a right-handed player, you can't put it behind him. With a lefty, you can put it to his forehand or backhand. It gives you an extra five to seven feet of space to pass the puck."
Richards says that it is natural for him to play with left shooting players on the right wing and has been succesfull playing with Marty St. Louis and Loui Eriksson.

Richards expressed similar thoughts right after he signed with the Rangers.

After spending a week in Slovakia to attend the memorial service of his close friend Pavol Demitra, Marian Gaborik returned to the MSG training center today to take part in some of the skating drills.

John Tortorella said that Gabby's skating looked "fine". While he met with the media, Gaborik complimented his new center Brad Richards by calling him a "natural playmaker."

Gabby has had a tough go of it this summer but he seems like he wants to get ready for the season and hopefully playing with a natural like Richie should make his life easier on the ice and get him back to being a 30-40 goal scorer.

Ted: How can you be so sure that Brad Richards and Marian Gaborik are going to work well together? We have seen before, cough Scott Gomez cough, that just because a guy is pretty good at passing the puck doesn't mean that he will make an all-star out of the guy he is playing with.

Adam: It's a fair question and to be honest, no one is positive that Gabby and Richie will click. The reason that I think it will work out is because it seems like two puzzle pieces fitting together. Richie is an elite pass first player who filled a glaring hole the Rangers had on the first line and Gabby is an elite level scorer who would benefit from playing with someone who can set him up and leave him to do what he does best. I also expect Gabby to bounce back after his down season last year and come into this season very motivated and ready to score.

While it's no lock, the pieces fit together so well that it's hard to see it faltering. With Gomez, he couldn't play with Jagr since they both wanted to carry the puck and then he never really had another player to pass to. He was okay with Brendan Shanahan, but Nikolai Zherdev and Markus Naslund didn't really work out. Richards is a far better player than Gomez and Gabby is better than those two players and has a skill set suited to play with a guy like Richards.

Part 1 and Part 2

Now let?s get to what we all want to know; will Richards and Gabby mesh on a line together? Most Rangers fans envision Richards feeding Gaborik in prime scoring areas for a bunch of goals this year. And that?s where I am going to start my analysis; with primary assists. Primary assists obviously tend to play a more direct role in goals being scored than secondary assists. Since Richards is a prime setup guy then it stands to reason he would excel in that category.

Here?s how Richards performed in terms of primary assists per 60 minutes of ice time, both at even strength (ES A1/60) and with the man-advantage (PP A1/60).

At Houses of Hockey, they look at the big players who have changed teams this offseason and wonder which one will have the biggest impact.

They think that pairing Brad Richards and Marian Gaborik together could turn into gold for the Rangers.

I think that Mike Richards will have a tremendous season out in LA to prove to the Flyers that they shouldn't have traded him. I also want to see how Dany Heatley does in Minnesota. I think those two and Brad Richards will lead the way.

Derek Stepan would have fun with pretty much anything. The guy is all smiles all the time.

If the Rangers have a vision of moving Derek Stepan to wing, or he doesn't get better at faceoffs, that would be a cool place for him to play.

As for chemistry with Marian Gaborik, Richards, a left-hand shot, explained last season that he liked the idea of another lefty playing the right side. Richards says that setup gives him more options for putting the puck in a scoring area, especially drop passes.

Elliotte Friedman of CBC

I can't wait to see these two in action, especially if Gabby is shooting the puck with confidence.

In the NY Post, Larry Brooks spoke with Marian Gaborik. Gaborik said that he was very excited about the Rangers signing Brad Richards and the potential for the two of them to play together.

Gaborik says that developing chemistry takes more than just skating together:

"If I'm with Richie, it's going to be very exciting. You can never say how much time it might take to develop chemistry, you need to spend time together away from the ice and develop trust in each other, but I'm really looking forward to getting out there with him."

I would guess that if Marian feels this way, he could have Richie as his roommate on the road, especially for the trip to Europe and Western Canada to start the season. That would be a very good way for them to get to know each other and develop a trust and friendship. Style wise the two should complement each other. Richie can pass it and Gabby can shoot it. It's almost as simple as that.

On Friday, Gaborik's agent Tobin Wright tweeted at me that Gabby could get 50 or 60 goals playing with Richards.

If Marian Gaborik is healthy and skating at full speed, he should work wonders with Richards. I wouldn't bet the farm on 50 or 60, but if everything goes to plan, we should see the Gabby of two seasons ago back on Broadway. Brad Richards can work with the puck in the offensive zone and Gabby can go into the spots where he will be best suited to score. The Rangers have a number one line now. That is something that I don't think you could have really said since Jaromir Jagr was skating with Michael Nylander.
