In the NY Times, Jeff Klein describes the play by play that led to the Rangers first goal last night:

Michael Del Zotto sent a laser pass from his own goal line to the center circle. Richards accepted it on his forehand while pivoting, his back to the Bruins? zone, and without switching to his backhand ushered the puck ahead to the left wing, reducing its speed by half.

Somehow that redirected puck went perfectly to Nash, tearing down the left side. He crossed the puck perfectly to Gaborik, speeding down the right wing, who lifted it over the sprawling Rask. The Rangers had their first lead of the season.http://youtu.be/sCCX6yfS-JQ

Marian Gaborik scored his first goal since the Rangers first playoff game and graced the back page of all three local newspapers this morning after scoring in triple OT to defeat the Caps this morning.

On his goal, Gaborik said, Richie handled it behind the net and I just tried to get open and it was a beautiful pass and I tried to get good wood on it.

John Tortorella said of Gabby last night, "I hope it gets Gabby going. It's a guy we need as we continue."

With the Rangers up 1-0 last night but Ottawa controlling most of the play, Marian Gaborik went to the net, waited for Craig Anderson's legs to open up, and slipped the puck into the net.

After the game on MSG, Gaborik said "It was a quick 2 on 1 at the net and I tried to fake the pass to Richie, I went 5-hole and it worked perfectly."

John Tortorella said on HNL last night, "It's one of the greatest goals I have ever seen. It's one hell of a goal, but they can't get scored on twice by the fourth line."

He also added, "They gotta play a little defense and they are both capable of doing that."

On Gaborik going to the net to score more this season, John Tortorella said following the game,?

?It?s a huge part of his game this year, he?s not swinging out, he has played in traffic all year long. I haven?t gone through his goals but a number of them are just banging them in there. He?s made a concerted effort to work on the details of his game both offensively and defensively and it?s really paying off for him.?
In the NY Post, Gaborik told Larry Brooks, ?I want to be around the net. I want to be in that scoring area.?

I noticed back in November that Gaborik was no longer a jump shooter and was willing to go to the net and battle for his goals. He still has his shot, but he realized where he had to be to get his goals. They aren't the highlight worthy goals, but they all count the same and they are having a big impact as he becomes a more complete hockey player.

Asked during the postgame show on MSG last night, John Tortorella said that he chose Marian Gaborik to go third because:

"He has been our best player this year. He is ready to take the next step."
Gaborik had been 2 for 19 previously in his career.

This may be the best that Gabby has played as a Ranger. He had seven shots last night and was robbed by Hiller a bunch of times. His legs are moving, he is shooting, going to the net, playing physical. He isn't a jump shooter anymore. He is going to the rim and willing to battle for the goals that he scores. He wants to be a leader and go back to being the kind of player that you laugh at the idea of trading him.

This was very encouraging last night. Gabby was just flying all over the place and Richards is just as good as advertised. His shot is so underrated and his vision is terrific. Derek Stepan didn't look out of place in that spot and I expect them to keep working well together.

I came across this video the other night and the way he skates, moves his legs and snaps his shot with confidence and authority was all missing for most of last year. Brad Richards will help him, but it is up to Gabby more than anyone to get himself back to being a 40 goal scorer.

Gaborik said that he is excited about Richards but that he also needs to develop a trust in him.
