Nice Rafael Montero video here. I don't buy some of the scouting report, but click through if you're curious about the video.

SSA: @ Brooklyn Cyclones 1, Vermont Lake Monsters 0?

Hansel Robles?(pictured) took a perfect game into the eighth when he gave up a two-out single. His final line: 8 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K. A week shy of his 22nd birthday, Robles is having an outstanding season. His 1.48 ERA is now third in the NYP, his 51 strikeouts are third (behind only teammates Luis Mateo and Rainy Lara) he's second in WHIP (0.80), fourth in innings pitched (54.2) and fourth in lowest walk rate (0.99 BB-IBB/9 IP). His strikeout to walk ratio is a tasty 8.5. Again, according to some reports, he's been up to 94-95 mph in recent starts. According to Cyclones' Pitching Coach Marc Valdes, he was 92-94 mph on Friday. ?One major red flag: he's listed at 5'11" and there just aren't that many right-handed starters under 6' in the big leagues.

SS Philip Evans singled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. The 19-year old is hitting a superficially unimpressive .234/.314/.348, but the 30/22 K/BB rates in 50 games are very solid.

Kirk R. asks,

Regarding your entry on the unprotected Mets for the Rule 5 draft, I noticed you didn't say anything about Mark Cohoon. According to the link you provided, he is unprotected. I know he had a rough season in AAA, but what are the odds he gets picked? If nothing else, he could be a LOOGY for a major league club.

You also had him ranked #16 on your top 41 prospects list. How far has he fallen in your mind?

The Bisons finished a four-game sweep of the Norfolk Tides behind a nice night from Mark Cohoon. ?Actually, it was Cohoon's best start in AAA: 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K. ?I watched a the last few innings of Cohoon's start and for the most part he looked "on." ?In the innings I saw, the changeup and curveball were working for him, but he was having a little trouble locating his fastball.

@ Durham Bulls 9, Buffalo Bisons 3

Mark Cohoon continues to struggle against AAA hitters. He gave up 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings, allowing four runs, three earned, while walking none and striking out two.

I tuned in to watch Cohoon yesterday, and I saw a bunch of comfortable swings for Durham hitters. Meaning, the hitters were not fooled by any pitches from Cohoon and most importantly, the hitters were not moved back off the plate by anything on the inner half.

You want to talk about the offensive uprising Sunday? Sure. The Bisons' scored a season-high 16 runs. Half of the run scorers for Buffalo reached via nine walks issued by Norfolk.

LF Nick Evans was 3-5 with a double and 5 RBI. ?Evans (pictured) has hit safely in each of his four games with the Bisons since returning to Buffalo after he cleared waivers following being designated for assignment, going 6-14 (.429) with three doubles. ?He has a funny-looking eight game hitting streak going since he had hit safely in his last four games with the Bisons in May before he was called up to the Mets.

With two outs in the top of the eighth inning and the Bisons leading 3-2, Bobby Parnell was summoned to pitch to Yankees top prospect Jesus Montero. ?Montero took a 0-1 hanging slider deep over the right-center field wall for a go-ahead three-run home run. Josh Stinson (pictured)was in line for the victory before the Montero blast. ?Stinson's 7 2/3 IP, 3 hits, 2 er, 0 bb, 6k performance was his best since joining the Bisons.

I had the privilege in talking with Chris Mellen of soxprospects.com (a Red Sox prospect site), who was in attendance at Mark Cohoon's start last night.? Mellen is the Director of Scouting for the site, and provides substantial scouting reports based on his first-hand observations as well as interactions with professional and amateur scouts.

Cohoon cruised through the first five innings yesterday (5 hits, 0 runs, 1 bb, 4 K), but ran into trouble in the sixth giving up a double, walk, and a three-run home run. Overall Cohoon still sports a 1.44 ERA, and has struck out 24 batters in 25 innings, while holding opponents to a .237 average.

Here are some of Mellen's observations:

Baseball America has their weekly Prospect Hot Sheet list revealed every Friday afternoon.? Last week, Matt Harvey was #7 on the list, and Jeurys Familia was named "In the Team Photo".? This week, two Mets prospects were listed. RHP Brad Holt at #8 and 3B Jefry Marte at #13, came off of an outstanding week of play to propel themselves back into the prospect spotlight.? AARecord: Binghamton Mets 3-6, sixth place, out of six, in the Eastern League Eastern Division

Quick Overview: The B-Mets are hitting an anemic .189/.261/.302.? They're last in the 12-team league in runs scored, batting average, 11th in OBP and 8th in slugging.? The team hit three home runs Sunday, and is now tied for second in the league in the category.? By the way, the Eastern League as a whole is hitting .238/.306/.350.

The pitching staff, led by Brad Holt and Mark Cohoon is third in the League in ERA (2.91) but 10th in strikeouts (60 in 77.1 IP), which isn't totally fair because the B-Mets have thrown the fewest innings of any team in the league.? The B-Mets have issued the fourth-fewest walks (25).

There was a flurry of Mets minor news over the last couple of days.? With official rosters trickling in, we can now form rotations and lineups based on who is going where.? Here are some of the most newsworthy notes:

  • Josh Stinson (pictured), who many thought would be headed to AAA, will get the ball on opening day for the Binghamton Mets.
  • Rounding out the rest of the B-Mets rotation behind Stinson will be Mark Cohoon, Brad Holt, Robert Carson, and Brandon Moore.
  • B-Mets manager Wally Backman says Eric Campbell will hit third and Josh Satin will play second base and bat fourth.
  • Jeurys Familia apparently will be headed back to St. Lucie (A+), instead of moving up to Binghamton.
  • With news that Satin will be the B-Mets starting second baseman, it reveals that Reese Havens, who would be slated to Binghamton, is not healthy enough to start the season.

As I strolled into the Mets minor league camp today, the first rounds of intersquad games were under way. I was really focused on getting a good look at the pitchers today, and got some good video of a number of guys. I was impressed by some of the arms I saw, and was equally disappointed in others. Here are some of the notes I took from today's action:

- Matt Harvey showed why the Mets selected him in the first round. His fastball sat comfortably at 93-95mph with life in the zone. His front side flew open when he tried to overthrow the baseball, but he showed clean and easy mechanics. He threw a power slider (82-84 mph) with good tilt and late bite, and commanded it well. His curveball (80-81) was his best offspeed offering. It had hard two-plane break to it with very tight spin and hard downward break. He also showed a potential plus change-up (83-84), with good arm speed, fade, and sink. His demeanor on the mound was outstanding as well.

- Steven Matz, who did not pitch today, told me he has had a couple of minor setbacks in his rehab stint, but he is on schedule to pitch later this summer for a short-season team.? He will be staying in PSL for extended spring training.

I recently had the privilege in chatting with Mets pitching prospect Mark Cohoon.? Cohoon, the Mets Sterling Organizational Pitcher of the Year, finished 2010 with a record of 12-5 an ERA of 2.57 between Savannah (Low-A) and Binghamton (AA).? Cohoon was drafted by the Mets in the 12th round of the 2008 MLB Draft.

MD: How did it feel to be drafted by an organization like the New York Mets?

MC: It was awesome to be drafted by the New York Mets. To know I would have a chance to pitch in the greatest city in America is a major blessing. We have an amazing coaching staff and leaders who are serious about winning. The Mets are always competitive, and with the?grace of health will continue to fight for playoffs annually. I only hope to be a contributor to them in the future.

The Portland Sea Dogs became the latest Eastern League team to beat up on Robert Carson (1-6, 8.74)? in a 6-7 B-Mets loss on Monday night.? Carson gave up seven runs for the second-straight start: 5 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 2 BB, 5 with a WP and HBP.? Carson has made nine starts in AA and has allowed at least four runs in all but one.? After a 9.61 ERA in four July starts, he's run a 8.06 ERA in August.

I expected the 20-year old Carson to have trouble initially at AA.? I just didn't see the numerical indicators (K/9>1, K/B >2/5) at advanced-A that suggested he was ready for AA.? I didn't think that he was going to get abused all summer long.? Check his July/August splits.? Do you see anything to get excited about?? His home run has dropped from obscene to "high."? Nope, that's not it.

Meanwhile, while Mark Cohoon has made the adjustment.? The Mets made the aggressive decision to promote Cohoon directly from the South Atlantic League directly to AA Binghamton coming out of the SAL All-Star Break.? And Cohoon had trouble initially.? In his first seven starts, he only threw six innings once, and that came in a start when he gave up six runs.
