EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Defensive tackle Markus Kuhn (knee) and linebacker James Morris (quad) were placed on injured reserve by the New York Giants on Friday.

The Giants signed two players from their practice squad, defensive end Brad Bars and tight end Matt LaCosse.

The Giants officially announced they have signed DT Barry Cofield to stabilize the interior of the their defensive line.

Cofield was the Giants' fourth-round pick out of Northwestern in 2006 and was a starter on the defensive line until 2010. He left the club in 2011 via free agency, signing with the Washington Redskins, who released him this past February after he missed eight games with ankle injury.

Cofield, 31, had hip, ankle and abdomen issues this year and attracted little interest until the Giants came calling. The defensive line has taken some major hits this season, most notably with Jon Hankins, and now Markus Kuhn's status is in question with a knee injury.

From Lou Musto of GiantsRush.com:

This piece marks the beginning of a series that will analyze the New York Giants? 2012 draft picks and gauge what their outlook could be for the upcoming season. To begin this series, we?ll kick off with seventh-round pick Markus Kuhn.

Taken with the 239th overall selection out of North Carolina State, the German-born defensive tackle made quite the surprising impact during his rookie season with the Giants. In 10 games, Kuhn recorded eight tackles and four pass deflections, while proving to be a fierce, physical presence in the middle. Unfortunately, a torn ACL in Week 10 against the Cincinnati Bengals cut his rookie campaign short. The impact it may have going forward is yet to be seen.

Last year at minicamp, Giants' rookie DT Markus Kuhn could only stand around and watch. The German national's work visa was stuck in a wad of bureaucratic red tape, prohibiting him from participating in drills with his new teammates.

This year, Kuhn was back watching minicamp drills again, rehabbing from the torn ACL he suffered in the Giants' Week 10 drubbing in Cincinnati. His goal is to be ready for training camp, and even though he's optimistic, his approach is pragmatic.?

?I?m a little more than six months in right now," Kuhn said when asked how his rehab was going. "I?ve been here all the time working with the trainers in the weight room with the strength and conditioning staff?just getting better. I?m out there on the filled right now going through different drills. I?m not doing any contact with other guys. I?m just doing what I can and taking it day-by-day.?

The stalwart of the Giants defense for recent memory has been the defensive line -- while the pass rush garners the most attention, it's the tackles who allow it to come to fruition.

During the first day of organized team activities Wednesday, the team revealed a new defensive tackle rotation amid off-season signing and draft picks.

With Chris Canty now a member of the defending Super Bowl champion Ravens and Rocky Bernard gone, Linval Joseph is one of only a few veterans who remain on the roster from last season.

Aiming to add depth to their defensive line, defensive tackle Mike Patterson is paying a visit to the New York Giants.

Patterson, the longtime Philadelphia Eagle, was released in late February. The 29-year-old former first-round draft pick visited with the Detroit Lions shortly after, but no deal was reached.

Patterson's visit included a physical, according to reports, as Patterson's seizure during training camp in 2011 nearly ended his career. In January 2012, he underwent surgery to remove an arteriovenous malformation from his brain.

Tom Coughlin said just minutes ago that rookie DT Markus Kuhn could be done for the season with a torn ACL. Kuhn was assisted off the field yesterday and taken via cart to the locker room.

Although Coughlin backtracked after blurting it out, he seemed sure that Kuhn's diagnosis was correct. ?Kuhn, a product of Germany via North Carolina State, has dressed for every game this season for the Giants. Not bad for ?long shot seventh-round pick who needed work visa clearance to play in the NFL.

"That's sad, that poor kid's got and ACL, I believe," the coach said.

We believe its time for Giant fans to familiarize themselves with rookie DT Markus Kuhn, who suddenly has gone from project status to potentially getting significant reps, thanks to the sudden rash of injuries to the D-line.

Q: Do you feel like you?re ready to take on a larger role if your needed to?

A: Absolutely.? Whatever the coaches ask me to do, I try to do to the best of my ability.? I?m working hard every day and I know I have to improve on a lot of things.? The only thing I can do is work on them every day and hopefully, I get better and everything works out.

The Giants' defensive line is already one of the league's best. No team has a stable of quality ends like the Blue, and now their interior line is stepping up their games as well.

Chris Canty, Linval Joseph, Marvin Austin, Rocky Bernard and Markus Kuhn are being joined by the 350 lb 12-year vet, Shaun Rogers - a former Pro Bowler who the team will use to fill gaps (no pun intended).

The 33 year-old Rogers is being counted on to rub off some knowledge on the younger players and to defray the possible loss of Canty (knee), who has still not been cleared to practice by the medical staff.

Giants' 7th-round draft pick Markus Kuhn is a prototypical Jerry Reese selection: a raw talent with loads of potential and upside. ?He finds them and hands them over to Tom Coughlin to mold into pros. And you have to ask what keeps Coughlin young....

Coughlin may have his work cut out for him this year with the likes of TE Adrien Robinson, OT Matt McCants and Kuhn, who is 6'5", 303 and 26 years old. He is from Germany and football was something that he knew nothing about until he came to the U.S. on vacation when he was 14.
