I played a whole season there and thought I did well. A couple weeks passed by in free agency, a couple more weeks passed going into free agency, and I just felt like, ?Well, they?re gonna try to pay the guys they can and see what?s left for me.? It?s kind of like high school, you know, you wanna take this one girl to prom, so you keep trying to get her, but this other girl is cute but she wants to talk to you too. But you keep chasing the other one and by the time you realize you can?t get the hottest girl in school you try to get the other one but then she don?t want to go out with you either. So now you have to go to the prom alone.

Our man Jimmy Kempski of Blogging the bEast rationalizes the Giants' passe strategy for retaining TE Martellus Bennett. It was pretty fairly simple: they didn't have one. Jimmy thinks that's a good thing. Giant fans may have been overrating him this offseason, but GM Jerry Reese keeps a level head.

His "prove-it" deal to Bennett last March was a smart one. Too smart, because Bennett played himself right out of the Giants' price range. Not the worst thing in the world.

Bennett flew out of the gate last September, setting a Giant record when he caught a TD pass in each of his first three games in Blue. But he quickly plateaued, failing to build on his strong start. The Giants weighed the pros and cons of signing/not signing Bennett the past few weeks. You saw their decision today. Too many cons. They nary lifted a finger to keep him.

There were rumors earlier today that Giants free agent TE Martellus Bennett was close to signing with the Chicago Bears. He confirmed the rumors a short time age via Twitter:

The deal was not a done one at the time, however....

Now that the Giants have satisfied one of their more imminent needs this offseason by signing back OT Will Beatty to a five-year, $38,75 million contract today, they could be seeking to secure another one of their key impending UFAs: TE Martellus Bennett.

With Beatty in the fold, an offer may be forthcoming shortly to the hulking superhero of MetLife, but right now he says he's not "feeling the love" from the Giants.

The self-proclaimed "Black Unicorn" is in Tampa working out with his brother Michael and is a pending free agent for the second consecutive winter. By all accounts, the Giants want him back and he has said he will come back...for the right price, of course.

As you probably have heard by now, Tampa Bay DE Da'Quan Bowers was arrested yesterday at LaGuardia Airport on felony handgun charges.

According to Mike Garafolo of USA Today, these charges will not be taken lightly, even though Bowers has a clean record.

Meris Campbell, a spokeswoman for the Queens District Attorney's office, said Bowers will be charged on two counts of criminal possession of a weapon on the second degree ? the same charges levied against former New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress in 2008. The charges carry a minimum sentence of 3? years in prison.

The Giants took a flier on TE Martellus Bennett last year, inking the former Cowboys' second-round pick to a one-year, "show-me" deal at $2.5 million deal in hopes that he would show them something.

uire

He did. Now the ball is in the Giants' court. Bennett is a UFA again this offseason and the Giants will not be the only team seeking to acquire his services.

The Giants rolled the dice on TE Martellus Bennett last spring, signing him to a modest 1-year, $2.5 million deal. It was called a "show me" deal by many. Bennett responded by having his best year as a pro (55 receptions for 626 yards and 5 TDs) and feels he fits in here with the Giants. He would prefer to stay, but that is up to GM Jerry Reese.

"Yeah, of course I would want to come back," Bennett said today when asked. ?"I think this place has been great. I love the organization, the people, the team, the city and the fans. I love everything about here. You always want to be at a place where you love everything. There are only so many places you can go where you love everything about it."

Did you meet with Jerry Reese today?

What's ailing the Giants' offense these days?

It starts with the quarterback, but he's not the only player to blame. After all, football is a team game.

A reminder, here were the final numbers in the Steelers' 24-20 win from Sunday.

The Giants and Cowboys are set to face off in their second showdown of the season on Sunday.

For the G-Men, it's a chance to get revenge for Jerry Jones' comments following his Cowboys' win in the season opener and extend their lead in the NFC East. A win would situate Big Blue at 6-2 and potentially three games better than the runner-up.

For the Boys, it's an opportunity to sweep the series against New York for the first time since 2007 and make ground on the division-leading Giants. Both Dallas and Philadelphia are sitting at 3-3, with the Eagles facing a tough one vs. Atlanta.

Looking at Martellus Bennett, it is hard to believe he is only 25. ?He was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft. He had just turned 21. The Cowboys had high hopes for Bennett, but he and QB Tony Romo never clicked.

In Bennett's rookie season, he and Romo hooked up for 4 touchdowns, but that early synergy disintegrated over the next three seasons. Romo favored the more seasoned Jason Witten in the passing game and Bennett became practically invisible. There were no more touchdowns and only 65 receptions over his final three seasons in Dallas.

When Bennett became eligible for free agency this past winter, the Giants swooped in and signed him almost immediately. He was brought in to defray the losses of Jake Ballard and Travis Beckum, ?who both tore ACLs in the Super Bowl.

Definitely can be a greater asset. He is a threat. He?s a threat down the seam, he?s a threat in the middle of the field in two-deep. He?s fast, he?s long, he can reach up for the ball, and we perhaps haven?t taken full advantage of that yet, but it?s a two-way street. I mean, you have to build in confidence. Being in a certain place at a certain time, the ball will be there. You have to make a play when the ball does come.

Hakeem Nicks will be missing his third straight game this Sunday as he continues to nurse his foot and knee injury. Ramses Barden has also been ruled out due to a concussion.

All of a sudden, an area that was the Giants strength will rely on contributions from a medley of different receivers.

Victor Cruz is a given. After a few timely drops Week 1, he?s bounced back to show that last season was no fluke. However, if the Browns or any other opposing defense focuses on limiting Cruz, Eli Manning will need his other targets to step up.

Tynes' Last-Second FG Falls Short

The much-maligned Philadelphia Eagles entered Sunday night?s game 2-1, but it was their escapes against Cleveland and Baltimore in Weeks 1 and 2 and their failure to show up in Arizona that left a cloud of doubt hovering over them.

Of course, the Giants knew they would get their best effort in primetime Sunday.

Tom Coughlin said he did have "the right vocabulary" to describe garrulous TE Martellus Bennett but did say, "I like them to have their own personalities. I just like them to be able to structure within the concept of trying to keep the focus on the game, on the field, and on the team. I don?t like robots. I like to kid around with them every once in a while. I also like them to realize when it?s acceptable, and when it isn?t acceptable."

The other day we pointed you to an article that our NFC East blogger - Jimmy Kempski - posted on his site,, Blogging the Beast. Jimmy outlined a scenario in which newly-signed TE Martellus Bennett gets himself cut by the Giants this summer.

I know, it's a bit of stretch but when you read his new post, you may change your mind. Not many people know or follow the NFC East as well as Jimmy does. And this is coming from me - a guy who's been doing this for a long time. He tells it exactly as he sees it.

I saw a comment where someone mentioned that Jimmy failed to?focus on the fact?that Bennett was running at half speed because of a bad hammy. Little does that commenter know that Jimmy knows more about that than most. He was on the sidelines at Giants' minicamp. He walks the walk. He's not just some blogger shooting from high weeds. Take a step back, people....

The signing of free-agent Martellus Bennett was met with mixed reviews. Many said a change of venue would unleashed the 6'6" former Dallas second-rounder's potential. Others believe the Giants will stick to the "show me" deal they inked him to in early hours of free agency.

Our NFC East contributor, Jimmy Kempski, was at Giants' minicamp. Bennett did nothing for him except solidify the fears that he will once again not live up to expectations. In fact, Jimmy thinks the Giants won't give Bennett much latitude this summer....

The Giants had one of the league?s most prolific offenses last season, ranking ninth in points per game (24.6), fifth in pass yards per game (295.9) and eighth in total yards per game (385.1). These metrics are impressive, but let us not ignore Big Blue?s putrid rushing yards per game average (82.1), good for last in all of football.

The departure of Brandon Jacobs?and his accompanying 152 carries and 571 rushing yards?to the San Francisco 49ers only figured to further debilitate an already feeble ground game, leaving the Giants in danger of reclaiming their spot as the league?s worst rushing team. Help arrived at approximately 11:30 p.m. Thursday night in the form of 5-foot-9, 205-pound running back David Wilson, a shifty speedster from Virginia Tech who immediately slides into the No. 2 spot on the Giants running back depth chart.

With the 77th installment of the NFL draft now officially in the books, seven new faces?excluding UDFA?s?join the defending Super Bowl champs hoping to accomplish the same feat in 2012. While all of the Giants? draft picks can?t be pegged as surefire starters in the fall, they are sure to have an impact over the next five months as roster sizes are cut from 90 to 53.

Here?s how the newest class of rookies fit in:

Mike Garafolo, our Giants Insider from the Newark Star-Ledger, caught up with Dallas Cowboys' TE Jason Witten at the Nike NFL Uniform Launch in Brooklyn yesterday.

Witten spoke about his former teammate and understudy, Martellus Bennett, who signed a one-year deal with the Giants last month. Bennett was a former second-round pick of Dallas and his career stalled behind Witten, who is one of the game's best tight ends.

?I think his confidence was probably shaken a little bit in Dallas." Witten said. "Few plays, his numbers were limited, so I?m sure that?s a part of it."

New Giants' TE Martellus Bennett always had potential. We saw how highly the Cowboys thought of him. They made him the 61st overall selection in the 2008 NFL Draft and then put him on a path to stardom. So everyone thought.

The Cowboys could not find a place for Bennett in their offense. They already had a Pro Bowl TE in Jason Witten, who also happened to be QB Tony Romo's best friend on the team and favorite receiver.
