Former Giants' second round pick DT Marvin Austin is getting a look from the DT-rich Detroit Lions today as per NFL reporter Jason LaCanfora:

The Giants would have liked to have kept Austin, who finally showed some "flashes" in camp this summer after several seasons of injury and underperformance. The rumors were the Giants tried vigorously to trade Austin on Saturday before the cutdown deadline.

Aiming to add depth to their defensive line, defensive tackle Mike Patterson is paying a visit to the New York Giants.

Patterson, the longtime Philadelphia Eagle, was released in late February. The 29-year-old former first-round draft pick visited with the Detroit Lions shortly after, but no deal was reached.

Patterson's visit included a physical, according to reports, as Patterson's seizure during training camp in 2011 nearly ended his career. In January 2012, he underwent surgery to remove an arteriovenous malformation from his brain.

This season, the Giants lacked their signature pass rush, which had lifted them over the Patriots in Super Bowls twice and had set the tone for the rest of their defense.

Whether it's via free agency, the draft or trades, the Giants need to upgrade their pass rush, which will allow their linebackers to focus more on stopping the revent and their defensive backs on generating turnovers.

The heart and soul of the Giants D: the defensive line. Let's begin there.

Giants' DT Marvin Austin dressed in Giant blue for real last week for the first time since the team made him their second-round selection in last year's NFL Draft. Aystin missed all of 2011 with a torn pectoral muscle and has been battling back issues this summer. In reality, Austin has not played in a meaningful game since 2009 as member of the North Carolina Tar Heels. He was suspended for academic reasons and was ineligible to play the 2010 season.

Last week, Austin dressed but did not get into the game. His physical status is only part of it. The team isn't quite sure he's ready, as indicated by DC Perry Fewell yesterday.

"No doubt that he?s rusty," said Fewell. "We would?ve played him if we needed to play him. We had talked about that as we approached the game. He knew the game plan; he?s going to be rusty whether he plays last week or this week or what have you. He knows the game plan, so coach Nunn is doing a great job at trying to get him up to speed, but he?s going to be rusty when he has to play football."

The Giants' defensive line is already one of the league's best. No team has a stable of quality ends like the Blue, and now their interior line is stepping up their games as well.

Chris Canty, Linval Joseph, Marvin Austin, Rocky Bernard and Markus Kuhn are being joined by the 350 lb 12-year vet, Shaun Rogers - a former Pro Bowler who the team will use to fill gaps (no pun intended).

The 33 year-old Rogers is being counted on to rub off some knowledge on the younger players and to defray the possible loss of Canty (knee), who has still not been cleared to practice by the medical staff.

Giants? second-year defensive tackle Marvin Austin was a first-round talent that fell to the Giants in Round 2 of last year?s NFL Draft. He lost the entire season to a torn pectoral muscle and is one of the many players the Giants have in their deep arsenal that are chomping at the bit to show Giant fans what they can do.

He will be placed in the rotation with Chris Canty and Linval Joseph to give the Giants the run-stopping DT presence they have sorely been missing the past few seasons.

So much for going into the season with a healthy roster. The Giants lost three players in the last 24 hours to season-ending injuries.

First, CBs Terrell Thomas and Brian Witherspoon went down with knee injuries and now second-round pick DT Marvin Austin has a torn pectoral muscle and will miss the entire season as well....This is getting out of hand....

There is little in the hopper to help the corners. The team will have to make a trade, it seems. On the DL Austin will be replaced by veteran Jimmy Kennedy, who was signed today.

QB: A-

Let?s state the obvious. Eli Manning is the starter. Continuing with the obvious theme, Manning needs to improve.

I don?t want to hear one more excuse about the players around him, injuries, or any other outside factor. He is supposedly the chosen one, the franchise symbol. Yes, many of his interceptions last season bounced off receiver?s hands. Yes the run game bottomed out at times in 2009. Yes, two seasons ago he surpassed 4,000 yards in the air. It doesn?t matter. He?s being paid to be a leader. If a receiver can?t catch, teach him how. If a member of your offense is obnoxious and overbearing in the huddle/locker room, handle it.

So if you saw my tweet Friday, you know I was expecting to release my first roster breakdown of the season. Then I decided (just had an inkling) that maybe...just maybe I should let the weekend go by and wait until the first full week of camp had passed.

Obviously (and sadly) I made the right choice. So while I try and piece together my positional ratings for tomorrow, I have one upside to leave you amongst the chaos.

Yes, Amukamara is out for an undetermined amount of time. Yes, he's had all of two professional practices and likely won't be ready to contribute anyway when he does return. But he's only one draft pick.

Video: Marvin Austin On Outside The Lines

I'm not sure if this has been posted here yet, but it is very interesting. It's an in depth look at Marvin Austin's off the field issues in college, as well as his preparation for the NFL draft.

For one thing, it makes me believe that his "issues" may be a little overblown. Austin is an emotional, high-character guy who is driven to prove his critics wrong. He made some poor decisions in college, but accepting illegal benefits is a relatively benign offense when compared with some of the violent criminal behavior we have seen in professional sports in recent years.

The Daily News' Ralph Vacchiano has an in-depth?look at?the Giants' second-round draft pick Marvin Austin. Austin, a 6-2, 312-pound defensive tackle out of North Carolina, joins Big Blue after a difficult college career. Still, those who know him best speak highly of his character and talent: It's been more than a year, but Butch Davis still remembers every detail of the day he had to break Marvin Austin's heart. He remembers sitting with him in his staff room in Chapel Hill, N.C. He remembers the anxiety he felt, the sad look on Austin's face. The head coach at the University of North Carolina also remembers thinking how unjust it seemed that he was about to take away the college career of a player he considered to be a genuinely good kid. In other stories, ESPN New York's Ohm Youngmisuk has a?piece on how the lockout has forced players -?rookies and veterans -?to stay on a budget. Believe what you may about this one: In fact, the lockout has had an effect on everyone from NFL superstars down to undrafted free agents. Each player has to proceed with caution not only financially but also physically as they try to avoid injuries. Not only have the paychecks come to a halt during the lockout, but so has the medical coverage. Players have had to sign up for COBRA insurance or join their spouse's plan or stay under their parents' coverage, as most rookies are doing. Some players also are taking out disability insurance and even life insurance plans. In this lockout climate, players can train all they want on their own and conduct workouts at high school fields, like Giants quarterback Eli Manning and Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez have done. But if a player suffers an injury during these workouts, he is on his own without coverage from the team as long as the lockout continues. Read more

The North Carolina Tar Heels are best known for their basketball program. But this year, they had an unprecedented nine players selected in the NFL Draft.

One player selected from UNC was the Giants' second rounder, DT Marvin Austin, who would have been a first round selection had he not been suspended for violating a draconian NCAA rule.

One reason for the increased interest by the NFL in Chapel Hill these days is the approach by head coach Butch Davis, who is a former NFL head and assistant coach with an impressive track record of success.

- The first thing you notice about this draft is speed.? The Giants lacked great team speed last season, and Jerry Reese clearly wanted to improve on that.? First round pick Prince CB Amukamara has solid, but not elite speed.? The same cannot be said for third round pick WR Jerrel Jurnigan and seventh round pick RB Da?Rel Scott, who are possibly the fastest players at their position in this draft.? Jurnigan should immediately be in the mix as the team?s return man, an area the team struggled with last season.? Scott has experience as a returner as well, but I doubt we?ll see him returning too many kicks with Jurnigan and a healthy Domenik Hixon.

- Another area that Reese improved was special teams.? Jurnigan aside, a number of the other draftees should help out on kick coverage.? Tyler Sash, Greg Jones and Jacquain Williams should all be special teams contributors.

- ?Prince Amukamara? was not the most interesting name to join New York sports on Thursday; that honor goes to ?God?s Gift Achiuwa,? who committed to St. John?s basketball.

Tom Coughlin on defensive tackle Marvin Austin, taken by the Giants in the second round of last night's NFL draft:

"I spent quite a few minutes on the phone with him before telling him that we would be drafting him in the second round and that there were some very, very high expectations for him if he was to come here and be a New York Giant. I think he understood that, so we will get off on the right foot.

"Certainly he has an opportunity now to show the world what he can do and hopefully package all the energy and disappointment and motivation. Hopefully he'll wrap all of that up and come here and be the football player that we think he can be."

The Giants second round selection Marvin Austin may have a suspect past, but if the Giants selected him this early, they must think he has a rosy future.

As per NFL com....

Austin has first round talent, but he did not play football last season and there are concerns about his character and work ethic. He appears to be a prototypical 3-technique defensive tackle, as he is a big boy with outstanding athleticism. He has great feet and the lateral agility to move quickly down the line and make tackles on the edge. He uses his quick heavy hands to shed blocks and has the closing burst to make plays in the backfield. Austin's off the field issues may prevent him from being a first round pick, but he could be a major steal in round two.
