AA: @ Binghamton Mets 7, Trenton Thunder (NYY) 3?

Cory Mazzoni: 6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 10 K. Mazzoni's last five starts: 31.2 innings, 27 H, 18 R, 12 ER, 8 BB, 44 K and a 3.41 ERA. Opponents hitting are hitting .233/.282/.362 against him with a 35% strikeout rate and a 6.3% walk rate. Why has the strikeout rate risen so dramatically? I do not know, yet.

Cesar Puello (1-for-5) slid back to right field, while Darrell Ceciliani (1-for-4) who has been nursing a strained grain returned to play center.

A+: St. Lucie Mets 3, Charlotte Stone Crabs (TB) 0?

CF Matt den Dekker reappeared in a game for the first time since breaking his right wrist in spring training. The 25-year-old was 0-for-4 with an RBI and a strikeout.

RHP?Matt Bowman was really strong again for St. Lucie: 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K. Bowman's results in the FSL are at least as good as those in the SAL. His strikeout rate is up from 20.9% to 25.8% while his walk rate is up from 3.2% to 5.3%. Bowman is a 6'0, 165 lb righty from Princeton. His fastball was 89-91 in the SAL and he works with a curve, a slider and a split-finger fastball that he uses as a changeup. He throws his off-speed stuff a whole lot. Bowman's fastball will leave him little margin for error against more advanced hitters, but his strong control will give him a chance to keep moving up as a starter. His ceiling is as a backend starter.

A+: Sunday: @ St. Lucie Mets 8, Bradenton Marauders (PIT) 2

The FSL did not play baseball on Memorial Day, which seems almost un-American.

They did play on Sunday, and Matt Bowman was sharp again: 7 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K. Bowman's been great in four starts in the FSL: 27 IP, 2.57 ERA, 21 H, 4 BB, 33 K. The Princeton product has a full five-pitch arsenal, two and four seam fastballs, curve, slider and splitter, which replaced his changeup this year. There's a little bit of deception in his Tim Lincecum-like delivery. Bowman, who will turn 22 in five days, is rolling through a-ball because he throws strikes, can spin his off-speed pitches for strikes, and can out-smart hitters. His strike-throwing ability will move him up the ladder, but?there's just a really sharp limit on the ceiling on a 6' right-hander with a fastball regularly at 89-91 mph.

A+: @ Dunedin Blue Jays 4, St. Lucie Mets 3?

Matt Bowman: 7 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 11 K. In three starts in advanced-A, he's allowed 13 hits, fanned 27 and walked three in 20 innings. Those are excellent numbers. In some ways, perhaps his ability to think through at-bats and set up opposing hitters plays better in advanced-A where hitters have a more refined approach than in a-ball where hitters are usually just attacking fastballs.

I'm still skeptical about Bowman long-term. The scouting report has not changed: Bowman is still a 6'0" right-hander who throws 90-91 with some deception from a Tim Lincecum-like delivery. Maybe he's a middle-reliever in the end in the big leagues.

RHP Matt Bowman and LHP TJ Chism combined the one-hit shutout for St. Lucie in this matinee. Bowman made his second start for St. Lucie and was excellent: 7 iP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 9 K.

A: Savannah Sand Gants 8, @ Greensboro Grasshoppers 1?

Daily Nimmo: CF Brandon Nimmo was 2-for-5 with a run scored and a strikeout. Nimmo now has multiple hits in four-straight games to run his 13-game line to .442/.508/.558 with three extra-base hits, five walks and 10 strikeouts. When the day started, he was leading the SAL in both batting average and on-base percentage. Most likely, the 20-year-old will be in the same position at the end of the day.

DH Gregory Pron doubled in a 2-for-3 day and drove home three.

On Opening Night, the Gnats and Pitching Coach Frank Viola elected to start RHP Matt Bowman, the Mets 13th round pick in 2012 out of Princeton where he was also an excellent shortstop. In fact, Bowman was an honorable mention All-Ivy at both shortstop and pitcher. With a motion that closely resembles Tim Lincecum, the 6'0", 165 Bowman has been sitting 89-91 at the end of Spring Training with his fastball.

He and I discussed his Opening Night assignment.

On Opening Night StartIt means a lot. I'm honored that Frank gave me the nod for the game. I just hope we start the season off right and I establish some type of pace for the rest of the season. Once Opening Day is done, everyone's just another starter.
