The 34-year-old defenseman signed an AHL contract to remain in the organization. Newsday's Arthur Staple reported that Carkner will have a player/coach role in Bridgeport (August 11).
If he clears through waivers, Carkner will head to AHL Bridgeport. Carkner has not played this season for the Islanders and in November the defenseman had surgery to repair a herniated disk.
Carkner has been with the Islanders for the previous two seasons, appearing in 75 regular season games and recording five points in that span. The 6'5", 233 lbs defenseman is in the final year of a three-year deal he has with Islanders.
