Yesterday, in the NY Post, Larry Brooks noted that the Rangers acquisition of Justin Falk and signing of Aaron Johnson spelled the end of Roman Hamrlik, Matt Gilroy and Steve Eminger's time with the Rangers.

Hamrlik was claimed off of waivers by the Rangers on March 6 and played 12 regular season games for the Rangers and two playoff games.

Eminger has played three seasons for the Rangers and signed one-year contracts with them the last two summers. He played in 35 regular season games and 11 playoff games.

According to Larry Brooks, in the NY Post, the Rangers are expected to offer defenseman Matt Gilroy a multi-year deal at an average number that is well below his qualifying offer of $2.1 million.

If Gilroy declines the offer, he will be a free agent.

This is what I suspected the Rangers would do. I could see a two or a three year deal at around $1.1 million per season or so. It will be interesting to see what Gilly does.

Gilroy also said he?s enjoying being paired with Mike Sauer because Sauer is so defensive-minded it allows Gilroy some freedom to get up ice and join the attack. One of the most improved areas of Gilroy?s offensive game is the confidence he?s showing in knowing the right time to pinch and doing it effectively.

...This will be big for Gilroy and I think/hope, his game blossoms a little more now? since he has been assured of his roster spot, at least for a little while. He talked after the Islanders game about how confidence changes everything and this should show him that his hard work paid off, but it's only the beginning since he needs to keep his spot in the lineup.

Hopefully he gets some chances on the powerplay to show off some of his offensive talents a little more.

Matt Gilroy scored two goals last night and broke a streak of over 60 games without scoring. After the game Gilroy talked about confidence in his game:

...There isn't a bigger Gilroy fan than me, and I am pumped about his game last night, but both his goals last night were a little suspect. The deflection on the first one was alright but the second one isn't a goal in almost any game. Still, it went in and if it lifts Gilroy's game to where he can really make a difference, then good.

The NY Post also has some on the defense

...Gilroy played about 10 minutes last night with two shots. I really believe that he is turning his career in the right direction to be a nice NHL player, but it will be hard for him to get a chance to show that with the Rangers since he has played well, but not as well as Steve Eminger and Michael Sauer who have the final two spots locked down. I don't think that John Tortorella doesn't like Gilroy, I think it's just that he doesn't trust him enough to play in key situations yet, but he really won't get that chance. Hopefully Gilroy plays tonight and can get a goal. I think that would go a long way.

Remember, Gilroy has only played 89 NHL games

Matt Gilroy last played for the Rangers on October 30th., which was five games ago. Since then, the Rangers third defense pair has been rookie Michael Sauer and Steve Eminger.

Before the game last night, John Tortorella told Rick Carpiniello of Rangers Report that Gilroy can't crack the lineup right now:

"Gilly has improved on all the things we asked him to do over the summer, but we still feel right now, that is our best six.?
...So he has gotten better, but not good enough to play. I want Gilroy to succeed the same way I want any Ranger to succeed, but it's just not looking great right now. When/if, he returns to the lineup, Gilroy would do himself a service by getting some points.

Andrew Gross tweets that Matt Gilroy will be scratched tonight for the Rangers and Michael Sauer will be in the lineup

Gross also quotes John Tortorella as saying that Steve Eminger is the fifth defenseman while Gilroy and Sauer are battling for the sixth spot.

well that is a little unexpected, and bad news for Matt Gilroy. He needs to really bring his game to another level or he will end up being the odd man out. Will be interesting to see how Sauer plays tonight

Yesterday after practice, John Tortorella told? reporters that Matt Gilroy has been the Rangers best defenseman at playing on the left side on the Rangers third pair.

It's expected that Gilroy and Steve Eminger will play tonight.

...I want to see Sauer in the lineup, but I also want the guys playing who are playing the best. Eminger was good the other night but he still has a long road towards fully securing his spot in the lineup. Is Sauer still hurt? or Sore? He was supposed to play against New Jersey but was scratched cause he was "sore."

Steve Eminger played nearly 14 minutes, had three hits, was a plus one and took two penalties.

Sauer played 13:19 with one blocked shot and he wasn't credited with any hits.

...I didn't realize that it came down to Gilroy vs Sauer. Frankly, I thought it would be down to Sauer vs Eminger but Eminger seemed to have his spot on lockdown because of his ability to play on the left side. Sauer had a solid game but Eminger had a more up and down. He struggled in the first but rebounded in the last two periods besides his penalty. I think Matt Gilroy should play tomorrow and maybe a rotation to start the season until there are two players who show they are better and worth the spot.

In the New York Post, Larry Brooks writes about the Rangers defense an quotes John Tortorella as saying the final two spots are up for grabs.

That means that Matt Gilroy, Steve Eminger and Michael Sauer, all right handed shots, are battling for the final two spots.

Brooks says that Eminger has switched to the left side and when on with Sauer, Matt Gilroy is also playing the left side.

...He looks bigger, his skating is still excellent and if he can get his defense to be at least close to what he can do on offense, he will be with the Rangers again this season. He told Andrew Gross that he did what the coaches asked him to do in the off-season and it started to show.

....I hope Gilroy isn't a workout warrior type guy. He can blow you away with his skating and some of his offensive game in practice and such, but it needs to transalate to an actual game. I love Gilroy but he has the strange situation of being older an signing for more money that there is more expected of him when he probably still needs this season and maybe another before he can be a true NHL defenseman. That probably doesn't work in his favor.

...Skating was always the best part of his game so its no surprising that he excelled here. As for Zuccarello, some people are acting as if its the end of the world that he struggled. Could have been plenty of factors for that. Its one skating drill. They have more and then actual practice. This doesn't put him in a hole, at least to me
