Gelbs on Nimmo's approach 00:02:06
On Citi Pre Game Live, Steve Gelbs talks about Brandon Nimmo's approach at the plate that has led to a .406 OBP over his last ten games.

There's a youth movement afoot in Queens. The mass exodus of pending free agent veterans has left holes all over the field, and young players are jumping at the chance -- for some perhaps their last -- to prove their worth to a team in transition. While none have the pedigree of Amed Rosario or Dominic Smith, some former early-round draft picks are going to become familiar faces over the next 5 weeks.

Selected in the first round of the 2011 Draft as a raw center fielder with a good eye at the plate, Brandon Nimmo had the misfortune of being yet another lefty outfielder on a team overflowing with them. The departures of Jay Bruce and Curtis Granderson have left the door wide open, though, and he should get a long look as a potential fourth outfielder for 2018.

While Nimmo has shown little power in his professional career, his 13.6 percent walk rate in the minors shows he has the potential to get on base at an elite rate. Early indicators suggest this approach is translating at the major league level, though the hit tool needs to continue to develop in order to justify the lack of power and vulnerability to strikeouts...

Jose Reyes has been placed on the 10-day disabled list due to an oblique injury, it was announced Thursday.

Wilmer Flores, who was scratched from Wednesday's lineup due to a sore rib, worked out before the game and will remain on the active roster, reports Kristie Ackert of the NY Daily News.

The Mets have recalled both Matt Reynolds -- who is in Thursday night's lineup -- and Gavin Cecchini from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Since Flores is able to remain active, the Mets will have to demote an additional player.

The Mets have placed RHP Robert Gsellman (hamstring) on the 10-day disabled list and recalled INF Matt Reynolds from Triple-A Las Vegas, the team announced prior to Wednesday's game against the Marlins in Miami.

Mets manager Terry Collins said Reynolds was en route from Triple-A Las Vegas and was expected to arrive in time for the game.

Gsellman left Tuesday night's game against the Marlins in the fourth inning after suffering a left hamstring strain while running to first base.

Gsellman was trying to reach base on a grounder and accelerated as he ran down the line, but appeared to hobble before crossing the base. He was then removed from the game.

The Mets placed RHP Matt Harvey and OF Juan Lagares on the 10-day disabled list on Friday and recalled INF Matt Reynolds and OF Brandon Nimmo from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Harvey, whose DL stint is retroactive to June 15, has a stress injury to the scapula bone in his right shoulder and is expected to miss at least a few weeks.

He complained of 'dead arm' after Wednesday night's start against the Cubs.

Lagares suffered a fractured IP joint in his left thumb during Thursday night's game against the Cubs...

The 26-year-old was hitting .300 with four RBIs and 10 runs scored in 13 games with the 51s, starting games in left field, center and third base. Reynolds made his Major League debut last year with New York and hit .225/.266/.416 with three homers and 13 RBIs in 47 games.

Gilmartin made one appearance for the Mets, recording two outs without allowing a run. The southpaw has a 3.69 ERA in 65 Major League appearances.

LF Yoenis Cespedes (hamstring) and C Travis d'Arnaud (wrist) are back in the Mets' lineup on Tuesday night.

However, Cespedes may be scratched from the lineup if the game is played in inclement weather, Terry Collins said.

Cespedes has not played since exiting last Thursday's game with the hamstring issue. He was on deck to pinch hit Sunday night when the Mets made the final out of the game against the Nationals.

The Mets have activated infielder Jose Reyes off the disabled list and called up RHP Gabriel Ynoa from Triple-A Last Vegas, the team announced Saturday.

To make room on the roster, the team has optioned RHP Logan Verrett and infielder Matt Reynolds to Las Vegas.

Reyes will bat leadoff and play shortstop Saturday night against the Padres. He went on the disabled list on July 30 (with a July 26 backdate) with a strained left intercostal muscle. He recorded two hits in five at-bats Friday night for the Single-A Brooklyn Cyclones.

Starlin Castro hit a sac fly in the 10th inning off Seth Lugo to drive in Jacoby Ellsbury, and Dellin Betances escaped a 10th-inning jam to give the New York Yankees a 6-5 win over the New York Mets on Monday at Citi Field. >> Read more...

  • The Yankees loaded the bases off Lugo (0-1) with nobody out on a walk, a single and a bunt for a fielder's choice. Ben Gamel laid down a sacrifice bunt, but Lugo's throw to third base was a split second late. Two batters later, Castro hit a deep sac fly to right field to break a 5-5 tie.
  • Betances struck out Curtis Granderson with runners on second and third to end the game to record his first save since Oct. 1, 2015. James Loney led off the 10th inning with a double and advanced to third on a sac bunt. Betances hit Alejandro de Aza, who advanced to second on a groundout. Betances struck out Granderson on three pitches.
  • Adam Warren (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the win.
  • Didi Gregorius tied the game with a two-out, two-run single in the top of the eighth inning off Addison Reed. The Yankees had runners on the corners with two outs, but a wild pitch allowed pinch runner Ronald Torreyes to advance to second and score on Gregorius' single.
  • Matt Reynolds hit a three-run home run off CC Sabathia in the sixth inning that turned a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 Mets lead.
  • Brett Gardner broke a 1-1 tie with an RBI double in the fifth inning, then scored on Ellsbury's RBI single that gave the Yankees a 3-1 lead.
  • Michael Conforto made it 3-2 with an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Sabathia allowed five runs, eight hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings.
  • Logan Verrett gave up three runs, four hits and three walks in five innings.
  • Wilmer Flores homered in the second inning to give the Mets an early 1-0 lead.
  • Ellsbury scored on a Verrett wild pitch that tied the game at 1 in the fourth inning.

A new era may have begun in the Yankees organization, but the 2016 squad still needs to compete. They did just that, battling back to tie the score in the eighth inning, and taking the lead in the 10th inning with the eventual winning run.

Coming soon in my Top 41 Rankings: Matt Reynolds, the Mets' second round pick from the 2012 draft.

Who plays is often as important as the results in the low minors. That was the case with the Gnats this weekend. Savannah elected to skip RHP Michael Fulmer, who was scheduled to start on Sunday in favor of RHP Marcos Camarena. The 19-year old Fulmer, the Mets' supplemental first round pick in 2011, is fine physically. However, the team is contemplating whether to shut him down for the year. As of Sunday, the Mets and Gnats staff had not made a final decision about whether Fulmer would make another start.

Fulmer threw 68 innings in high school last year and 5.1 as a professional for a total of 73.1. He's up to 108.1 innings now, an increase of 35.1 innings over a year ago. The 19-year old has improved measurably over the course of the year, lowering his ERA from 3.35 in 11 starts and 51 innings in the first half to 2.20 over 57.1 inning and 10 starts in the second half. His strikeout rate increased from 20% in the first half to 24% as his slider improved.

Mets' second rounder Matt Reynolds is off to a slow start with the Savannah Sand Gnats hitting .197/.278/.282 in his first 19 games with five walks and 12 strikeouts.

His first professional surprise came on draft night. After starting at third base in 63 of his 66 games for the College World Series-bound Arkansas Razorbacks in 2012, the Mets announced that they would play him at a shortstop. In fact, the Mets see him playing multiple positions in the future.

These are his responses from an interview he and I did early this month. I added some comments in italics for background.

Michael Fulmer is getting betterFriday: 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K. He's up to 8th in the SAL in ERA (3.00) as a 19-year old and is third in the SAL in opponents' batting average (.209). His ERA by month: April-4.08, May-3.00, June - 2.22.

His last three starts: 0.93 ERA, 19.1 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 7 BB, 17 K, .134 opponents' average (9 H/27 AB). "I feel like I'm pitching now," he told me after his last home start when he struck out a career-high eight batters in six innings. He is pitching more. That includes throwing more changeups, even in hitters' counts to get easy outs. It means have having the faith to throw his slider more.

A+: Daytona Cubs 4, @ St. Lucie Mets 3 (12 innings)

RHP Erik Goeddel?(pictured) was a first inning walk away from perfection through five innings. He did not retire a batter in the sixth before a single and a pair of doubles chased him from the game. His final line: 5 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K.

25-year old 1B Alan Dykstra was the DH, going 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and a strikeout. In five rehab games, he's 6-for-14 (.429) with three doubles, five walks and six strikeouts. He should be ready to return to AA soon, which might help push Eric Campbell, whose strong season I touched on yesterday, to up to AAA.
