Henrik Lundqvist put on a masterclass in goal with 40 saves as the Rangers beat the Red Wings 2-1 in overtime. 

Each team were held scoreless through two periods but it was the Rangers who blinked first, but Chris Kreider equalized before Mats Zuccarello won it in overtime. << Box score

Chris Kreider and Derek Stepan each scored their 20th goals and had an assist, and the New York Rangers hung on to beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-2 Monday night to earn a sixth-consecutive playoff berth.

Dan Boyle and Mats Zuccarello also scored for the Rangers, who snapped a three-game skid and moved three points behind second-place Pittsburgh and remained two ahead of the fourth-place Islanders in the Metropolitan Division.

The Rangers clinched playing down a defenseman most of the way. Captain Ryan McDonagh was injured blocking a shot early in the first period and left the game.

The New York Rangers face the Buffalo Sabres at Madison Square Garden on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET.

According to STATS:

  • The Rangers have won each of their last nine games versus the Sabres, their longest win streak versus Buffalo all-time and their longest active win streak versus any single opponent. New York has outscored Buffalo, 36-13, over the nine-game streak.
  • The Sabres beat the Maple Leafs, 4-1, on Thursday. The win was Buffalo's seventh in March, the Sabres' most in a month since totaling 10 in March of 2012.
  • The Rangers lost at Carolina, 4-3, on Thursday, New York's ninth loss this season when leading in the third period (tied for third most in the NHL, entering the weekend) and its third such loss since March 12 (tied with Carolina for the most in the NHL entering the weekend).
  • Johan Larsson recorded his first career multi-goal game with two goals on Thursday, his second consecutive game with at least two points (totaling two goals and two assists over the two games). Prior to his current streak, Larsson had never recorded consecutive multi-point games.
  • Cal O'Reilly had two goals on Thursday, his first career multi-goal game. O'Reilly recorded all three of his goals on the season in March, his second-most goals in any calendar month over his career (had four in November of 2010).
  • Mats Zuccarello scored a goal on Thursday, his third in his last five games played (also added two assists over that span). Zuccarello has totaled 58 points this season, one shy of his single-season career high (set in 2013-14).

The New York Rangers face the Detroit Red Wings on the road Saturday at 2 p.m.

According to STATS:

  • The Rangers have lost each of their last two road games versus the Red Wings, and are 1-6-0-2 on the road versus Detroit since the start of the 2000 calendar year (their worst road record versus any opponent over that span). Over that span, New York has been outscored, 33-20, on the road versus Detroit.
  • The Rangers won, 4-2, at Buffalo on Tuesday. New York took a 3-2 lead into the third period and is now 24-1-0 when leading after the second period, one of five teams with one or fewer losses when leading after the second period (entering the weekend; also Pittsburgh, Washington, New Jersey and Tampa Bay).
  • The Red Wings beat the Jets at home, 3-2, on Thursday to snap their three-game losing streak. Detroit trailed by two goals before scoring three unanswered goals en route to the win. The Red Wings now have five comeback wins when trailing by at least two goals this season, tied with Dallas for the most such wins in the NHL (entering the weekend).
  • Mats Zuccarello had one goal and two assists on Tuesday, his sixth game this season with at least three points. The last Rangers player with more three-point games in a single season was Marian Gaborik in 2009-10 (nine games).
  • Derick Brassard had one goal and one assist on Tuesday, giving him 50 points on the season (his second consecutive season with at least 50 points). Brassard has recorded at least one point in each of his last three games, totaling two goals and two assists over that span.
  • Rookie Dylan Larkin scored his 20th goal of the season on Thursday, giving him 20 goals and 20 assists. Prior to Larkin, the last Red Wings rookie with at least 20 goals and 20 assists was Henrik Zetterberg in 2002-03.
