Islanders captain John Tavares and star Kyle Okposo were two of 34 players to take part in the National Hockey League's annual media held in Manhattan. The two teammates took part in interviews and promotional photo shoots. As John Tavares told NHL.com, the day is always an indicator that the start of training camp is right around the corner.

"It always signals the season is right around the corner, training camp is coming up, the buildup [to the season] is coming. It's an exciting time. You always enjoy increasing that buildup with all the media attention we get there [for a] couple days," he said.

The Giants pounded the Eagles 42-7 in Week 17 last season, but that game had no real meaning for either side. However, Sunday?s game has huge implications for two teams desperately trying to stay alive in a weak NFC East.

If the last two weeks have proven anything, it?s that the Giants? offense is incredibly inconsistent. Running back Ahmad Bradshaw and offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride met the media Thursday to discuss how the offense has prepared this week for the Eagles.

?We?re just not making plays that we?ve had some opportunities to make, and they?re there to be had,? Gilbride said. ?Whether it?s a misfire of a throw, or pressure on the quarterback, you got two big plays last week.?

The Giants need plenty of help in order to sneak into the playoffs, but Bradshaw is only focused on the upcoming game.

Giants? offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride met the media Thursday to discuss the team?s offensive outlook heading into Sunday?s contest with the Washington Redskins.

He first commented on Hakeem Nicks?s progress. Nicks practiced this week as he continues to heal from foot and knee injuries.

?He?s getting better,? Gilbride said. ?Unfortunately, it?s a lengthy process getting back to where he was. He is definitely better this week than he was the week before. You?re encouraged by seeing him do some things maybe he couldn?t have done last week. It?s a matter of just continuing to see that growth and return to where he was before he was injured.?

Dean Brown, via Puck Daddy, is the latest member of the Canadian media to go on a rant about how John Tortorella handles his media esponsibilities during the playoffs.

Brown writes that it might be time for the media to walk out on Tortorella as he tends to do to them and that the people hit the hardest by Tortorella's "childish and unprofessional manor" are the fans:

"Like it or not, the media is the conduit to the fans.? If you treat the media this way you are snubbing and disrespecting the fans of the game.? That is unacceptable."

Much has been made since the playoffs have started about John Tortorella and the length, or lack of, his meetings with the media.

In the National Post, Bruce Arthur writes that even with a level of secrecy and withholding information that happens in the playoffs, Tortorella takes it to another level, "still, even in hockey?s obfuscatory world of upper- and lower-body injuries, Tortorella comes across as arrogant, as a bully, as a jerk. This is the face, for whatever reason, he chooses to show to the world."

Jay Feaster, who Torts worked with in Tampa Bay, told the National Post that this is all done for a reason,

During his press conference today, John Tortorella was asked why he was the way he was with the media and if it was just because he didn't like dealing with them.

Torts responded, "Are you being a wise ass? I am not going to give you that much information. Some of you guys sit there and tell me that I am curt or whatever and I am not going to have a staring contest. If you don't ask me questions I will just leave. That is the way it is. I am sorry that I am not a guy who wants to converse about everything during the playoffs."

In the Ottawa Sun, Don Brennan writes about how in his pre-game press conference yesterday, John Tortorella answered a few questions but left during a break and as a reporter was starting to ask his question.

Tortorella responded that he missed his opportunity and Brennan wrote, "One reporter best summed up Tortorella?s 54-second session, saying the Rangers coach had displayed ?subhuman behaviour.?

On the MSG Postgame show, Marty Biron said of the hit that Brooks Orpik put on Derek Stepan, "it crossed my mind to go all the way down [towards Orpik] it was pretty gutless and dirty. That guy is known for sticking his knee out and his elbow out. I looked over at the bench and Brian Boyle looked like he was ready to jump over. It's what he has done his entire career. He will continue to do this unless someone can stop him with a suspension. Hopefully these are the hits that won't be in the game much longer because they are dangerous."

John Tortorella said of the hit and the Penguins,

"It's a cheap dirty hit. I wonder what would happen if we did it to their two whining stars over there? I wonder what would happen? I am anxious to see what happens with the league with this. There is just no respect amongst the players.
