Height/Weight: 6’1”, 185 lbs
Acquired: 16th rd 2011
2011 Rank: N/A
Why Ranked Here: Speed, speed and speed. Marquez, a high school shortstop who the Mets will move to centerfield can absolutely fly. As you can see in the scouting video below, he put up a 3.8 home to first time. That’s plus-plus.
The Mets paid the Marquez $325,000 to sign at the deadline last August. The two-sport star at Odessa HS in Texas is also playing football at Texas Tech where he had a reasonably strong season as a true freshmen.
Marquez has a chance to be a premium defender in centerfield. If he can get on base, there’s some all-star potential in here.
2011: Texas Tech: 12 games, 4 starts, 25 receptions, 240 yards. He was sixth on the Red Raiders in receiving yards, and was seventh in receptions. He was second in kick return yardage (168 yards) on nine returns.
Baseball? He signed too late to play in 2011.
Dr. Pangloss Says: All-star centerfielder
Debbie Downer Says: NFL wide receiver, or you know, a speedster who can’t hit MLB pitching.
Projected 2012 Start: Kingsport Mets
MLB Arrival: 2016
