Now Commenting On:

A+: @ Dunedin Blue Jays 4, St. Lucie Mets 3

Matt Bowman: 7 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 11 K. In three starts in advanced-A, he's allowed 13 hits, fanned 27 and walked three in 20 innings. Those are excellent numbers. In some ways, perhaps his ability to think through at-bats and set up opposing hitters plays better in advanced-A where hitters have a more refined approach than in a-ball where hitters are usually just attacking fastballs.

I'm still skeptical about Bowman long-term. The scouting report has not changed: Bowman is still a 6'0" right-hander who throws 90-91 with some deception from a Tim Lincecum-like delivery. Maybe he's a middle-reliever in the end in the big leagues.

Ryan Fraser made his 2013 debut, yielding a run in an inning of relief. I honestly cannot remember why he missed the first month of the season.

A: @ Savannah Sand Gnats 5, Charleston RiverDogs 2

With the win, the Gnats slipped a half game ahead of Charleston for first place in the South Atlantic League Southern Division.

Gabriel Ynoa  (pictured) was dominant most of this game, retiring 11 in a row and 16 of 17 from the end of the first inning through the end of the sixth inning. His final line: 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K. At 93 pitches, his second walk of the game, leading off the seventh, finished his night. At least three of the strikeouts he got were swinging against breaking stuff. He used the slider to good effect, and had good movement on both it and his changeup. Ynoa, who will be 20 at the end of the week, has gone six inning or more in five of his last six starts, and over five innings in each of his last six. I counted first-pitch strikes to 17-of-22 batters he faced.

C Kevin Plawecki (.361/.439/.605 - 40 gms) was 1-for-4 to extend his consecutive games on base streak to 30.

Jayce Boyd DHed again, apparently his arm is sore - too sore for much field work at first.
