Mets top pitching prospect Zack Wheeler (pictured) was dominant for the second consecutive start, helping the 51s top the Sacramento River Cats 6-2 in California's capital city. Wheeler threw 90 pitches (55 strikes) over six impressive innings to collect his 2nd win of the season and showed the command of his fastball and breaking ball that had been missing during his first five starts this year. His velocity was also outstanding as usual, hitting mid to upper 90's with his fastball and occasionally touching 90 mph with his slider. He didn't allow a base runner to advance past first base and three of his four strikeouts came on sliders.
Final line for Wheeler (2-1): 6IP, 3H (all singles), 0R, 0ER, 1BB, 4K
In his last two starts (both wins), Wheeler has thrown 12.2 innings, allowed eight hits and two earned runs, walked two, while striking out 12. He lowered his era from 5.79 to 4.00 and his opponents batting average from .283 to .246.
cf Collin Cowgill and ss Omar Quintanilla were the offensive stars of the day. Cowgill was 2 for 4, drilling a three run homer over the wall in left in the 7th to pad the lead. Quintanilla also had a pair of hits, including a two run double to open up the scoring in the 2nd.
