Now Commenting On:

Las Vegas 51s 0, @ Iowa Cubs (CHI) 4

RHP Matt Fox made his second start with the 51s after being signed as a free agent May 17. His stat line Thursday afternoon was almost identical to his initial outing five days ago in Omaha, when he allowed three earned runs on six hits in five innings. That day, the right hander got the win thanks to seven runs of support. Today, however, the 51s failed to score a run and Fox lost the ballgame after completing five innings, surrendering three earned runs on seven base hits.

The offensive stars yesterday, Collin Cowgill and Kirk Nieuwenhuis, who each hit homeruns and drove in a combined five runs, were 0 for 8 with 3 strikeouts between them Thursday. Nieuwenhuis's average slipped below the Mendoza line at .198, while Cowgill is barely above it at .219.

The only bright spots offensively were a pair of hits each for 2b Wilmer Flores (pictured) and ss Brandon Hicks. Flores hit safely in seven of the eight games on the road trip, with a homer and triple mixed in. He's now at .271/ .323/ .441, 13 doubles, 2 triples, 4 homeruns and 28 rbi for the year. The double and rbi totals are second best on the team to Andrew Brown.

The 51s return to Las Vegas and open an eight game home stand tomorrow night against Salt Lake City.
