The Mets spent Monday morning huddling over their first-round GM interviews, and in the afternoon decided that Brodie Van Wagenen, Doug Melvin and Chaim Bloom would advance to second round interviews, which is expected to start Tuesday, with Fred and Jeff Wilpon.
According to a person with direct knowledge of the process, a fourth candidate could still emerge.
The team did significant legwork on MLB exec Kim Ng and agent Casey Close, because both were serious, qualified candidates. But ultimately, they decided that the other three held more appeal to them.
The list of GM candidates is now 3-4. A month ago, there were more than 30 names on an early draft. The Mets seem on track to make a hire by the GM meetings in early November.
