Now Commenting On:

The July 31 non-waiver trade deadline is approaching, but Mets general manager Sandy Alderson remains non-committal regarding whether the Mets will be buyers, sellers or stand pat (Rubin, July 7).

Alderson said before the Mets opened their current 10-game home stand that the decision to be buyers or sellers may hinge on how the Mets fared, and he is not ready to choose a course.

"Look, let's see where we are at the end of this week," Alderson said. "We're always willing to listen. We may be thinking in terms of the second half of this season. We may be thinking more in terms of next season. We've made a lot of deals in recent years where we've gotten prospects who are a good ways away. I don't think we're thinking that way these days, although sometimes that's the value in a return. So I'd just hate to speculate on it."

Daniel Murphy's name has come up in trade rumors due to his expected arbitration raise after 2014 and pending free agency after 2015, and Bartolo Colon has also been mentioned as a player the Mets might dangle to other teams.
