Alderson said he does not intend to acquire a starting pitcher this month, since it is not a priority for the team at this time. However, he explained, improving the bullpen remains his top priority, followed by looking for another right-handed bat.
In regards to relief pitchers, Alderson later told WFAN that it has to be the right guy who can be acquired mid-season and pitch well in New York mid season. "It's a crapshoot," he said. "We need to make sure it has the best chance of working."
According to Alderson, he does not expect to make a trade any time soon, since prices are so high at this early date. However, in his view, things will accelerate from here.
In the end, though he wants to improve the team now, and is able to take on salary, he has not interest in trading away a player who might help the team in 2013 or 2014.
