Position PlayersRF/LF Cory Vaughn - Vaughn had an eight-game hitting streak snapped on Saturday with an o-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout. In that eight-game streak, he hit .333 with a .545 slugging percentage. Overall, he's hit .244/.320/.400 with three extra-base hits against four walks and 14 strikeouts in 11 games.
"3B" Aderlin Rodriguez - After a hitless beginning to the AFL, has hit safely in six of his last seven games but is still at just .205/.225/.256 overall with 11 strikeouts and zero walks in 10 games. Rodriguez will be 22 in November, and hit .260/.295/.427 in 62 games in St. Lucie this past year. He's playing for an Opening Day 2014 assignment to double-A, but he'll need to do a lot more in the AFL's final few weeks to earn it.
C Cam Maron - A double Saturday was his second extra-base hit of the AFL season as he's hit .192/.400/.269 with nine walks against five strikeouts in nine games.
PitchersRHP Hansel Robles - The 23-year-old righty had a decent start last Wednesday (4 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K). In his three appearances, he's given up eight hits and three runs in 8 innings with two walks and six strikeouts. According to MiLB.com's official stats, of the 10 outs Robles has recorded in the field of play, 7 have been flyouts and 3 have been on the ground.
Robles made 15 starts for St. Lucie this year and was ok: 3.72 ERA, 83 H, 66 K/29 BB in 84.2 IP. That's a 18% strikeout rate and a 8% walk rate. In his last pitchfx start, Robles was 88-91 with his fastball. He touched 92 and 93, but by his third inning did not exceed 90 mph. His firm changeup was 86-87 mph. The good news on his changeup is that it has the same horizontal movement as his fastball. while his slider, which had similar depth to his changeup, was 82-87.
RHP Cody Satterwhite - The 26-year-old has not allowed a run in his six innings. He's struck out six, walked three and allowed four hits. In his last outing with pitchfx Satterwhite was 88-90 with his fastball with a few changeups at 82 mph.
RHP Chasen Bradford - The 24-year-old reliever has not allowed a run in 5.1 innings, yielding two hits, and a walk while fanning three. He's working with a fastball at 90-93 and a slider at 83-84, which he throws a lot. By my count, he threw sliders on nine of his 17 offerings a week ago. Bradford allowed six runs on 19 hits in 25.1 innings in AA with a 18/8 K/BB ratio (2.25) and picked up ground balls to fly balls at a little over a 3:2 ratio. That's a strikeout rate of 17% and a walk rate of 7.8%. Four of the six runs he allowed were unearned, so adding those back into his ERA of 0.71 moves his R/9 back up to 2.13. Maybe there's a useful middle reliever in here, although his rate stats are not very impressive.
RHP Jeurys Familia - The best bet of any of the Mets' AFL delegation to help the team in 2014, or ever, Familia has allowed four runs on four hits in five innings. He's fanned seven and walked three. Control problems are very much still an issue, but other than the one homerun he's allowed, he's been getting grounders by the bushel. Oh, and he's throwing 93-97 with a lot of 94-96. His slider is 81-86. Familia has walked 18 batters in 23 MLB innings the last two years. If he can learn to throw strikes, he will be a very good MLB reliever.
