He gave up a hit and struck out one batter. It was his first official game appearances since ending last season early to have surgery on a herniated disc in his neck.
"That's a huge step, to see him out there for the first time and really see him let loose," Terry Collins said after the game. "He's been a little tentative in the pen, I understand it, but he threw the ball great. Those last five or six, he let go good."
Parnell sets up the rest of the bullpen. If he's the closer on Opening Day, Vic Black and Jose Valverde will likely be his set-up men. It's still a seemingly weak bullpen. However, there is potential, because any one of these young arms can end up injecting life we are not expecting. And, if they're not working out, Sandy Alderson can swap that guy out with someone else in the farm system, and so on and so on. I like this strategy. The problem for us, as fans and media, will be remaining patient as they work to find the right mix. But, that is all the more reason why a healthy Parnell is so important.
