Jay Bruce (plantar fasciitis in his left foot) will make his Spring Training debut today when he serves as the DH as the Mets face the Astros at First Data Field at 1:10 p.m. on SNY.
Bruce said Sunday that reporters shouldn't be wasting time covering his plantar fasciitis due to the minor nature of it, adding that he ran the bases on Sunday and planned to serve as the DH today.
Despite the injury, Bruce has been on the field each day participating in batting practice.
It was expected that Juan Lagares (strained left hamstring), might also make his debut today, but he remains out. Manager Mickey Callaway said over the weekend that Lagares would be playing if it was the regular season.
Lagares is not listed on the lineup card as a bench player and the Mets travel to Disney to face the Braves on Wednesday. So it seems his debut will not come until Thursday at the earliest -- when the Mets return to First Data Field to play the Marlins.
