Now Commenting On:

A bunion on Jenrry Mejia's right big toe forced him to leave his last start early. With Mejia set to start Friday against the Blue Jays, manager Terry Collins said the bunion could "absolutely" impact the fifth-starter race (Rubin, March 27).

Pitching coach Dan Warthen said the bunion was an issue during Mejia's recent bullpen session, but said he was unsure whether it would hamper Mejia during his start Friday:

"I honestly do not know. It hurt him on the side the other day, so we’ll find out."

The Mets paid Daisuke Matsuzaka a $100,000 retention bonus on Tuesday while delaying their decision on who will get the final spot in the rotation.

With Matsuzaka set to start on Saturday, the decision regarding who emerges as the fifth starter will be made shortly.
