"We've got to play better," Collins said. "We've hit a wall. We're a better offensive team than what we've showed on this homestand."
The Mets have lost five of their last seven games, during which they've been outscored 38-16.
“Coming into a homestand, we had a chance to make a huge impact with a very substantial lead, where nobody needed to be uptight,” Collins said. “We should have been quite relaxed with the lead we had. We should have been going out and playing the game nice and loosely and calm."
David Wright, who homered and made a barehanded play at third base Tuesday, disagrees with Collins.
"I don't sense that anybody's tight here or feeling the pressure," Wright said. "It's playoff baseball, there's going to be a little bit of pressure. We're trying to make a push. I don't sense it carrying over to the field. ... It's just some days you go out there and get beat."
Tuesday's loss dropped the Mets to 3-5 on their current homestand, securing their first losing home-stand of the season.
"We’ve got to quit trying to hit homers, I think, and let’s hit some line drives," Collins said. "We’ve just got to swing the bats better, because we’re a better offensive team than the way we’ve played this homestand.”

I'm concerned, because I don't like hearing Collins talk about how the team has "got to" do and "try" something. This is not the time of year to be going back to the drawing board. In fact, that type of talk is bound to make these guys press more...
Instead, like Wright said, sometimes a team just gets beat. It happens. I'd rather hear Collins tell his team to just relax and go out there and do what they know how to do. Frankly, if I had to guess, I'd say the offense is responding to not having a stable, consistent, dominant rotation going out there every night, which most likely let the hitters relax. Instead, guys are getting skipped, pulled early in games, there are spot starts, off days, etc., and there is no rhythm. Baseball players feed off routine. They treat it like a security blanket because it allows them to relax and focus on their own plan. The sooner these guys get back in to a nice, even flow, the sooner they'll start hitting and winning on a regular basis again.
