Granderson went 2-for-3 with a home run and two walks batting first in the order and starting in center field on Sunday.
“I just tried to get myself on base and try to get the team going,” Granderson told reporters (ESPN, June 15). “I’ve done it plenty of times in my career. I just didn’t know it was going to be today.”
Granderson missed the previous three starts with a sore calf muscle.
He is batting .375 with three HR, 10 walks and eight RBI in 13 games in June.
"This isn’t just draw-them-out-of-a-hat,” Collins said. “We tried to look back at Granderson's history when he led off, that’s what he did. He drew base on balls, and he hit doubles and triples and homers. I know he can do it."
