Terry Collins said yesterday that Murphy must get in to a exhibition game by this weekend if he's going to be ready for Opening Day.
Otherwise, Murphy could start the season on the disabled list.
Murphy has been sidelined with a strained intercostal muscle since February 18 - he has not appeared in a Grapefruit League game yet this spring.
If Murphy isn't ready to go, I would think that means Jordany Valdespin will be the team's Opening Day second baseman. If that's the case, the outfield will be comprised a combination of Marlon Byrd, Collin Cowgill, Lucas Duda, Mike Baxter, and maybe Matt den Dekker. In any case, the Mets could conceivably have a platoon at all three outfield positions, which is something Collins has said is not something he wants.
