The leadoff hitter reached base against him during five of his six innings.
Matsuzaka is likely to get least one more start before Dillon Gee returns from the disabled list, according to beat reporter Mike Puma (NY Post, June 27).
Pirates rookie Gregory Polanco broke the game open with a three-run home run in the fifth inning.
“I actually shook off d’Arnaud on that pitch and it ended up being a big mistake,” Matsuzaka told reporters after the game. ““I didn’t have my best stuff today. I just wanted to fight through.”
He pitched well in Miami, not so much in Pittsburgh. It doesn't matter, though, since he'll likely get bumped to the bullpen when Gee returns from the DL. I want to see more of Jacob deGrom in the rotation, he has shown too much promise to jerk him around. Plus, Matsuzaka pitched well in relief when he transitioned to that role earlier this season.
In 17 relief appearances this season, Matsuzaka has a 2.22 ERA, while striking out 28 of the 106 batters he faced.
