In Sunday's win against the Braves, he hit a solo home run, and also made a diving stop and glove flip to second base for force to end the eighth inning.
However, the 21-year-old infielder drew more attention for wearing rally cups on his ears...
"It's hilarious," OF Darrell Cecliani said after the game (June 14, 2015). "All I can think of is that it makes him looks like Shrek. He always does it when he gets a big play or makes a big play."
“I was just celebrating the moment when we were scoring some runs,” Herrera said laughing, according to the Daily News (June 14, 2015). "I was trying to get a rally going."
Herrera has been starting at second base in place of Daniel Murphy, who has been on the disabled list with a tight quad muscle. However, Terry Collins said Sunday that Herrera could continue to play second base given how well he's playing the last few days.
“Put it this way, if Murphy came back tomorrow, it’d be awful hard to take Dilson out of there," Collins admitted, talking to reporters after the game. "Dilson, his energy on the club is, I think, something we need. The way he plays, the way he goes about things. That's what happens when you get your players back."
"I can tell you, having talked with people on other teams, they think Herrera is a legitimate, big-time player,” ESPN’s Buster Olney said in January. “Murphy is just holding down his spot.”
In three years, Herrera will be an All-Star second baseman, Olney told the audience at Pitch Talks NYC earlier this year. Backman also said that Herrera will eventually be an All-Star second baseman in MLB.
Matthew Cerrone: This is simple! Herrera stays at second base, Daniel Murphy goes to third base. Infield done. That's it. And, I like it. Then, trade Jon Niese for anything to keep the ball off the infield grass, and to create a spot in the rotation for Steven Matz, and let's roll! In the event David Wright returns from the disabled list, Sandy Alderson can cross that bridge when he gets there. Who knows? Maybe Herrera starts to struggle? Or, maybe Murphy of Flores get injured? Or, maybe everyone is hot and you're faced with a awesome problem. The point is, Duda, Hererra, Flores and Murphy is the best infield possible at this point, so get Dan back and stop messing around..
