MLB Trade Rumors and ESPN New York project Davis will earn just below $4 million in salary arbitration for 2014.
Fowler will earn $7.8 million in 2014. He is eligible for arbitration in 2015, during which he can expect to earn around $10 million. He can be a free agent after 2015.
The Mets, Braves and other teams have inquired about Fowler during previous off-seasons, but the price to acquire him was always too high (Cerrone).
Fowler would be a very good fit for the Mets, if the price was right in trade. He’s coming off a down year and struggled with a knee injury in September, but he’s still young and he would fit at the top of the lineup. He isn’t a good outfielder, but a move to a corner spot could help to protect his weaknesses. His bat would fit well, as he has speed and gets on base, though he could draw more walks to enhance his game.
Fowler's home/away splits really scare me. If he can produce anything close to his Coors Field numbers at Citi Field, it's a slam-dunk trade for the Mets. However, I worry this deal would be lopsided because Fowler hasn't shown an ability to hit on the road, and Ike Davis could very well put things together in the high altitude. I've certainly been wrong before, and who knows, Fowler might turn things around and tailor his game to Citi Field, but I'm not betting my house on it. Of course, there's also the fact that Ike Davis isn't exactly a world-beater, so I don't expect a great return for him in any deal. I guess this is me verbally shrugging my shoulders and waiting for the next move, and I assume many fans would likely do the same.
